“That smile on your face says it’s just a matter of time though. I bet you can’t wait to get your mark on him.”

“I am looking forward to it, but when the time is right.”

“I’m happy for you. Especially after all that’s happened. You deserve a good man in your life, besides Victor that is.”

I laughed. “Victor is great, but he’s no omega.”

An alarm sounded on my smartwatch, and I looked at it. “I should be leaving soon. My flight is scheduled to leave in a couple hours.”

Roger nodded. “I’m glad you came out, and that you talked to me about your new company.”

“I can think of nobody more suited to have on my team.”

“We’ll make it a good one, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

 “Me too.”

We stood and he clapped me on the shoulder. “Head home to your new omega, and I’ll have my people contact yours to work out details. I should be able to wrap up most of my projects here within the year, then I can move out there for more hands-on work.”

 “Sounds good.”

We shook, then I headed out of the posh restaurant to where a sedan waited for me.

I’d be home in a matter of hours, and while I wanted to let David rest since he’d been ill, I couldn’t wait to see him the next day for the dinner party.

David was gorgeous in a blazer and collared shirt, and part of me wanted to drag him away to ravish him as soon as the party was over. But he was quiet and withdrawn. However, when I asked he insisted that he was well.

Did his brief sickness affect him that much?

I leaned over and kissed his temple as the servers brought out the dessert. “Are you feeling ok?”

He turned and gave me a weak smile. “I’m fine. But I do need to have a few minutes with you after dinner.”

I took his hand, and noticed the way he clung to it. Whatever he wanted was eating at him. “As if I’d let you out of my sight tonight,” I teased. “Three days away is far too long.”

His smile softened. “I’m glad you’re back too. I missed you.”

I kissed him again, ignoring the soft chuckles of my guests. They were all mated, so they would remember how sweet things were at the beginning.

Whatever was bothering David was about us, but the way he held my hand and smiled at me told me that he wanted me there. So I’d trust that he’d reveal it when he was ready.

Grins brightened faces around the table as my guests got a look at the dessert. It was imaginative and colorful, just like everything else David had made for the evening. I rubbed his back as he straightened to address the table.

“For dessert we have a watermelon-mint sorbet and a selection of candied citrus.”

It was a lighter option than I’d expected, but as I tasted it I understood. It was cool and refreshing, the perfect way to send our guests home. They would feel sated, but not like the meal had been too heavy for the weather.

We chatted about the charity’s scholarship programs for young artists, and their guest instructor lineup for public schools. They mentioned that they were trying to decide how to work summer programs into their lineup, and I shared a few thoughts of how they might be able to make it happen without needing a massive fundraising push.

We were about to relocate to the sitting area of the patio for cocktails when Victor rushed out of the house, obviously rattled.

I stood, frowning, and made my way over.

 “What’s wrong?” I whispered.

“Phone and email blew up in the past few minutes. All reporters. Somebody leaked Beischel Equity internal documents, specifically those related to your departure.”
