I stood, rounded the table, leaned in and kissed her cheek. “I’ve gotta go. Papa’s got Gerald coordinating my flight, but I’ve got traffic to contend with.”

“Should I call you a car?”

I shook my head. “I’d hired a car service for the day. The driver should be nearby, I just need to call.”

“Ok. You go, and think about visiting Harris Cove with me so we can catch up properly.”

“I’ll keep it in mind, assuming I survive papa’s wrath.”

 “Better get to Chicago then.”

“I’ll call you later,” I said, grabbing my things and heading towards the exit.

Nobody in my family would forgive me if I missed granddad’s birthday.

 Chapter 2 - Cadence

The base thrummed low and I could feel the vibrations in my feet. The beat was good, slow enough to dance to, but fast enough to be energetic.

There was a reason that tonight’s DJ was one of my favorites. He knew how to balance his set so that the music flowed seamlessly from one song to the next, but included natural breaks as well.

Given how packed the dance-floor was, I wasn’t the only fan out that night. The view from the VIP area was of people crammed shoulder-to-shoulder and with barely the room to breathe. Heat rose from the mass of bodies and mingled with that of the lights to make it uncomfortably warm, despite the chill outside.

I finished my drink, then held up the empty glass, catching the eye of the waiter, who nodded.

The song ended, and the mass of bodies below shifted to allow some dancers to leave the floor, while new ones attempted to take their places.

 “Your drink sir.”

I turned to the waiter and thanked him. He walked away, and I stared at his ass for a few seconds. Past me would have made a pass at a pretty omega like him in an attempt for a bit of late-night fun. Present me knew better.

I took a sip of my drink, letting the flavor flow across my tongue, then turned my attention back to the dance floor.

There had been a time when I would have been down there with the masses, grinding against any omega within arm’s reach. I’d taken a fair number of them to bed too, which got me into trouble more times than I could count.

Part of me still wanted to head down, flirt, and find a good-looking man who was interested in being knotted. But that didn’t hold the same appeal that it had before. Sex was great, but I wanted a deeper connection.

I wondered if I had a fated mate out there. Or maybe I was just getting older, even though I was still only in my mid-twenties.

Casual sex sounded fun, but the last few times I’d felt that something was lacking, even when still knotted inside the omega of the night. And I knew it was me, not them.

 “That’s quite the serious expression.”

I turned to see a cute little omega beside my table, a gaggle of his friends behind him. He was obviously dressed to impress, with a shimmery shirt that had to be the latest fashion, tight pants that left absolutely nothing to the imagination, and just a hint of makeup.

I forced a smile. “Just lost in my thoughts.”

 “Have a name Mr.Serious?”

 “Cadence.”

“I’m Eli,” he said. “What thoughts have you so occupied that a strong handsome alpha like you is sitting alone overlooking the dance floor?”

“Just thinking about work,” I lied.

He leaned in, a sly smirk on his face. “How about you take me down to the dance floor, and I help you think about something else?”

I shook my head. “Thanks, but I’m not in the mood to dance tonight.”
