I looked around the quiet floor, and decided to head back to my office.
It was as I sat that my cell phone rang.
“Doctor Donahue,” I answered.
“Hello Doctor,” came a pleasant female voice. “This is Alice from the surrogacy agency.”
I smiled. “Good afternoon Alice. How may I help you? Are there more interview questions for Tyler and I?”
“Actually,” she chuckled. “We have a potential surrogate for you. He lives in Mountain Springs, which you indicated was a preference. He has a stable job, and good education.”
Everything sounded ok so far.
Then she paused. “There is one issue though…”
My stomach dropped. “What is it?”
She sighed. “It’s part of the reason I decided to reach out to you first, and why you and your husband are actually my preferred clients to work with him. He has… a… somewhat uncommon medical condition.”
“What?”
“I’m afraid that I’m not authorized to disclose it at this time. But his medical team has approved his surrogacy, and will be monitoring his pregnancy. He’s also carried a healthy baby to term before, so we’re confident that he’ll be able to do so again.”
I took a deep breath. “I thought medical conditions that required extra care were immediate causes to reject a surrogate.”
She sounded nervous. “Normally, yes. But this is what we would consider an exceptional case.”
I frowned. “I don’t want to get Tyler’s hopes up. Let me talk to him before we schedule a meeting.”
“That’s fine. I would like to get this omega paired with a family quickly, but I do understand that I’ve been vague with unusual circumstances. However, I would ask that you please consider meeting him before ruling him out. He will be difficult to place given his condition, but it is also the reason why we approved his surrogacy in the first place.”
That last line gave me pause. They approved him because of his condition? What?
I decided not to ask. “Ok. I’ll talk to Tyler and let you know.”
“Thank you Doctor Donahue.”
“Thank you for calling.”
We hung up and I stared at the phone. What kind of medical condition would make a surrogacy agency, which normally only worked with the healthiest of surrogates, make an exception because of the condition?
What was wrong with this omega?
Chapter 6 - Tyler
“Let’s not get our hopes up,” Nate said as he smoothed my shirt over my shoulders.
I nodded, but couldn’t help the excitement in my middle. The agency had told us that it might take several months before they could find a surrogate willing to work with an alpha-alpha couple, but it had been less than a month and we were already headed to Mount Sable to meet with an omega in their office.
“I’m serious Ty,” Nate pressed. “I know what you’re feeling, I can see it in your eyes. But our rep has been extremely guarded about this omega. We know he lives here in Mountain Springs, is an educated professional, and meets most of our criteria. But we also know he has a medical condition that they won’t disclose.”
I sighed. “I know, it’s just… I have a good feeling.”
He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “I love your enthusiasm. But we need to be careful, ok?”
I nodded. “Ok.”
A few minutes later we were on our way to Mount Sable, where the surrogacy agency had an office.
