“I bet you won’t run up on Kastian and ask him if we were in the mall together,” I smirked.

David lunged at me. He was fast, but I was faster, and my desk was between us. Making good on my threat, I lifted my arm and sprayed mace directly in his face causing him to growl like awounded bear. “Hoe are you crazy?” he spat as he coughed and choked with his eyes shut tight.

Janet rushed into my office and when she saw me with mace in my hand and David using his shirt to wipe his eyes, her steps halted, and her lips parted into an O shape.

“If you don’t see this gentleman making his way out of this building in the next three minutes, call the police please,” I spoke in a pleasant tone that was probably very confusing to Janet.

“O-okay.” She turned and left the office as quickly as she’d come.

David glared at me with red eyes and tears streaming down his face. “I want my money.”

“I’m not giving you shit. You owe me money. Take it off my tab. Now get out.”

If I could read David’s mind, I’d probably be shocked at the thoughts he was having while he glowered at me. I had paid way more than $15,000 to keep him alive, so he could go to hell if he thought I was giving him anything back. I was mad at myself for not taking the money back when Kastian offered it to me. I wasn’t turning down anything else. So what if I did end up feeling like I owed Kastian. I’d rather owe his fine ass some coochie than to have a lame ass like David owing me money.

With his teeth clenched together, he walked out of my office probably calling me everything but a child of God. I really didn’t care. I could only pray that none of my realtors had clients at the moment. It was embarrassing enough that Janet was present to witness the spectacle. I was always professional, and I couldn’t help what someone came into my office and did but still. It wasn’t a good look.

I shut my computer down and grabbed my keys. When I told David I was going to get the paperwork that I needed to be able to file for divorce, I wasn’t lying. There was no way our marriagecould be saved. I was done. Janet’s door was open, so I stepped in on my way out.

“I’m sorry about that,” I gave her a small smile. “You know I never bring personal issues into work.”

“You don’t have to apologize to me. Things happen. I swear there’s no judgement here. Are you good?” I could tell she was genuinely concerned.

“I am. thank you for asking. I’m going to head out. Are you coming in tomorrow?”

A big smile spread across Janet’s face. “Yes. I have a client that is looking to buy, and she’s buying cash. You know that means whatever house she puts an offer on will more than likely be accepted because seller’s love cash.”

“Yes, they do. Congratulations in advance.”

“Thank you. See you tomorrow.”

“Bye.”

I walked out to my car making sure to watch my surroundings though I doubted David was still outside. He needed to be somewhere flushing his eyes out with water. My nose scrunched as I reflected on how he’d acted. I also wondered who saw me and Kastian at the mall and made it their business to tell David. I didn’t really care. It was just interesting how there was always someone somewhere minding another person’s business. Kastian was a very well-known man in Diamond Cove. I was well known depending on the circle.

I was known by many as being a successful, black, woman, real estate agent in Diamond Cove. David wasn’t exactly a nobody, but he wasn’t as widely known as Kastian. There were some that knew me as his wife. It baffled me that whoever spotted us in the mall knew who both of us were. It was either a man in the game or a nosey ass female. Looking at my watch, I realized I only had twenty minutes to make it to the courthouse before they closed. My office was only nine minutes away. I justhad to pray that traffic wasn’t insane, and that parking wasn’t a mess.

I found parking relatively easy, and that put me in a better mood. Even though I had time, I walked as fast as my legs would carry me to the courthouse. A small sigh escaped me when I saw there were four people ahead of me waiting to go through the metal detector. I could feel my phone vibrating in my purse but whoever it was could wait. After making it through security and navigating my way through the colossal building, I made it to the right room. Even after I got the papers in my hand, I knew I still needed to fill them out, get one of them notarized, and have David served. The process was nowhere near started, but getting the papers was a start. I got back in my car with a satisfied smile on my face.

Before reaching for my seatbelt, I reached for the phone hoping that I didn’t have to go back to the office for anything. My cheeks flushed when I saw that it was Kastian who called. I cleared my throat and returned the call.

“Damn, I never took you to be the rude type.”

It only took a split second for what he was referring to, to register. “I’m not rude. I’m so sorry. As I was reading the card, someone entered my office, and my life got hectic from there. The flowers are beautiful. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I decided to let you know you crossed my mind, since you clearly haven’t thought about me.”

I hated the way I was sitting in my car smiling like an idiot. “And how do you know what I have or haven’t thought about.”

“If you have the thoughts must not have been too good because you didn’t reach out.”

My smile widened. “That’s not how this works. I don’t reach out to men first after we’ve had sex. That’s on him.”

Kastian sighed. “Women and all these damn rules.”

“I like to refer to it as boundaries. Standards. Things like that.”

“I hear you Ms…” his voice trailed off. “What the hell is your last name because I’m not calling you that other shit.”
