“Don't stop,” I whisper. My tempo increases, my legs spread wider. I look depraved and desperate, frantically searching for a release.

“I’m never going to stop,” Theo murmurs in return.

He shoves my legs wider, thumb circling my clit again and again until I explode, body shaking and quaking. Sweat rolls down my cheek and it’s difficult to breathe, a stifling heat settling in the air. I can barely process what’s happening before Theo’s hands are on my cheek, jerking my head to the left.

“Fogged enough for you?” he asks, gesturing to the windows.

It’s like we’re in our own personal snow globe, a thick layer of condensation covering the glass. I smile at the sight, envisioning us naked together in a winter wonderland.

“No,” I answer, yanking his briefs down. “We can do better.”

He chuckles, the laughter fading into a moan as I sink onto him, taking every inch in one quick motion. “That’s my girl.”

I’m ignited, stars and electricity cackling from my fingertips. I kiss him like it’s my dying wish, like I’ll never have him again, meeting him thrust for thrust. I bite his neck, leaving a mark. His fingers grip my backside, bruising the skin no one else will ever see.

Theo whispers praise and encouragement in my ears. I groan at the depth. The intensity. The angle. The surprise when he lifts me, flipping us so I’m flat on my back, cloth warm against my thighs. He drapes my calf over his shoulder, left hand keeping me safely from the edge of the seat, a manic look in his eyes as he takes, and takes, andtakes.

His kisses up my shin, pinches my clit, yanks my hair, and I lose it, again, a wordlessthank youfalling from my lips as I spiral down, down, down, chasing the second orgasm in a matter of minutes. Five more thrusts and Theo meets me, movements stilling as I feel him trip over the edge, see the sag in his shoulders, hear the change in his breathing.

“Holy,” he pants, “hell. I’m out of practice.”

I giggle, reaching up to wipe the thin layer of sweat from the back of his neck. “Guess we need to keep practicing.”

“Jesus. I’d say so.” He looks up at me. A lazy, tired smile tugs at his lips. “Are you happy, Bridget?”

“Yeah, Theo,” I whisper. “Undeniably happy.”

FORTY-NINE

THEO

Bridget’s bodyis wrapped around mine when I wake up. Her feet press into my shin and her head rests on my chest. She’s breathing peacefully, a rhythmic inhale and exhale that tickles my bare chest with every puff of air.

I like seeing the brown waves scattered across the pillow like spilled chocolate. I like seeing her hand on my chest, chipped Christmas trees painted on her red nails. I like the smell of cinnamon lingering on the sheets even though she hasn’t been inside the store for close to forty-eight hours.

She’s stunning in the morning light with her sleep-mussed hair. Swollen lips from prolonged kissing. A naked body, clothes forgotten as we held each other through the night. She stirs and burrows her face in the crook of my neck. I rub her bare shoulder, skin warm under my touch. I slide over the cluster of freckles, across her clavicle, landing over her heart.

“Hey,” Bridget murmurs. Her eyes crack open. Already, they’re bright and sparkling, the day yet to begin. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas. How’d you sleep?”

“Great. Really great. You’re like a human furnace. I don’t need to pay for heat when I have your thigh over mine.”

“Glad to know why you keep me around.”

“The glasses are a nice touch, too.”

I chuckle. “I had an idea about the seventh tree.”

“Did you?” She sits up, the sheet pooling at her waist. “What is it?”

“I want you to tell me if I’m being selfish.”

“Doubtful. Let’s hear it.”

“My family and I haven’t had a real tree since the accident,” I explain. “It’s what we did before, and I’ve found I categorize my life into two firm timelines. Before and After. I keep the Befores far, far away from the Afters.”

Bridget shifts her position on the mattress, angling her body so she’s by my side. Unfolding my hands, her fingers map out the lifelines of my palm, a trail she’s trekked before. She doesn’t rush me, patiently waiting for me to share more.
