Torr nods. "Let's go."

We run through the gates and enter the compound without incident. There aren't many people out this late at night, so there isn't much trouble finding the building we need to break into. The building where my human is.

"Are you sure about this?" Torr asks. "We might get caught."

I smile at him. "It won't happen if we hurry." We put on the Valkryans' uniforms to blend in.

As we leave the building, we hear yelling and shouting coming from somewhere nearby. When I glance at Torr he shakes his head and looks away quickly.

"They found them!" someone shouts.

We rush down the street, not wanting to be seen or heard. I push Torr ahead of me as we sprint toward an alleyway between buildings.

"Which way do we go? Which direction?" I ask quietly as we continue to flee.

He turns back to look at me. "Keep going straight. Follow the wall until you see a door leading outside. Then take it."

"Okay," I whisper.

I turn left and follow the wall. Soon, I come across what Torr told me would be a door. I open it and peek out. No one is around, so I slip out and shut the door behind me.

There's a small courtyard surrounded by three buildings. All of them are dark except for one. I sneak closer and peer inside. Two guards stand next to each other near the front entrance. One has a laser rifle slung over his shoulder while the other holds some kind of device. Both have their backs turned.

"What do we do now?" I ask Torr.

"Just walk past. We won't get noticed," he replies.

"But how will we pass by unnoticed?" I question.

"Trust me."

I nod. I've been trusting him since we first met, and it always pays off. So far anyway. I step forward slowly. If they notice us, we're screwed. But I keep moving along the edge of the courtyard. As soon as I reach the end of the last building, I duck behind a tree and wait for Torr to catch up.

"How'd it go?" he whispers once we meet.

"Fine, just fine," I reply. "Now let's go."

We start walking towards the main building. A few minutes later, we arrive at its doors. Torr goes first and opens it. Once we're inside, we close the door behind us and lock it.

"Where should we go?" I ask.

"This way."

We wander aimlessly until we finally find the room that must hold Emma.

EMMA

Ihear knocking at my door. Whom can it be? I don’t want to answer it. Is it Anil’ha? Has he come to claim me already? I feel so afraid and vulnerable right now that I just want to hide away from the world.

The knocking is persistent though and this time I open up without thinking.

It’s not him. It’s Dhakar. It’s really him. My heart leaps as I see his handsome face smiling down at me. "Hi baby," he says softly.

"Dhakar?" I ask in confusion. He looks too good to be true, almost like a dream or even an angel. I smile back at him nervously but have no idea what to say other than 'hi'.
