He releases me and turns around.
“I thought we had something Emma but you chose him over me.” He snarls.
A sharp pain pierces my chest and I gasp for air.
When the alien leaves, I collapse to the ground. Tears run freely down my face. I can barely breathe and everything feels so heavy. What did he do to me? Why does my heart ache?
My mind goes blank. I don't remember anything else about that day except the fact that I woke up in a cell later that evening.
* * *
The next thing I know, someone is shaking my shoulder. I open my eyes slowly and look up at the female standing over me. It’s Kallena. She smiles sweetly and looks me in the eye.
Her smile disappears as she sees my expression. Her gaze falls to my wrists and her frown deepens.
"What happened to your arms?”
“I don’t know but it’s not as bad as it looks,” I tell her.
She nods and helps me sit up. As soon as I stand, my legs give way under me and I fall onto the floor again.
Kallena kneels beside me and takes hold of my hand gently. "Are you all right?"
"Yes. Just dizzy. I think I need to lie down," I mumble. “How did you find me here?”
“I managed to kill one of the guards with my knife and I searched everywhere for you,” she says.
"Thank you," I whisper.
"Don't thank me yet. There are still two aliens outside and I doubt if there aren't any others hiding somewhere inside."
I nod and lean against the wall behind us. I close my eyes and rest my forehead on my knees.
After some time, Kallena nudges my arm. "We should get going. They'll be back very soon."
I shake my head and try to move away but she grabs my shoulders. "Listen to me. If we stay here, they might catch us. Let's leave while they're distracted."
"Okay," I agree reluctantly.
Together, we walk toward the door and wait until it opens wide enough for us to slip through.
“Do you think Dhakar is on this ship ?” I ask Kallena.
“Maybe," she replies uncertainly.
As we step into the corridor, I hear a loud thud followed by the sound of metal scraping along the floor. Then another noise echoes through the hallways.
Suddenly, the doors burst open and a group of armed aliens rushes forward. Their weapons flash brightly and I'm afraid they will shoot us right where we stand. But then, I notice a tall male alien leading them. He has dark blue skin, long grey hair, and intense green eyes. He stops abruptly when he catches sight of us.
His eyes widen slightly and I realize he recognizes me.
“You must be the human woman Dhakar rescued. Well done, little one! You've saved yourself from death!"
A wave of relief passes over me and I feel my cheeks flush hot. This alien knows who I am.
"Who are you?" I demand. "And how do you know me? Are you really Dhakar's ally or just playing him as everyone else does ?"
The alien laughs loudly. "It seems you have already guessed what I am. And no, I am not Dhakar's enemy nor his friend. I simply came across him during my travels. Now, come with me so I can show you something."
