She didn’t see a way forward.

Worse, her showing up with Axel had sparked tantalizing fodder and sly looks at the party. What in the hell had she been thinking? She punched her pillow. Sure, she was mad at Axel for leaving like he had—saying what he had—but no one was madder at her than herself.

Prurient speculation had always been something she’d carefully avoided.

When people at the party had asked her about his presence, she’d crafted a story about bringing Axel as a way to help him expand his business into a designer line. She’d had to explain it somehow! A few people had told her they were interested in talking more to him about it, something that should have made her want to pop champagne with him.

But no, he’d left, and people had also pressed her on that, smelling a tantalizing story like they could the newest tantalizing perfume to come out on the market.

Fashion people loved gossip.

So she’d politely cut a somber face when they’d asked about his sudden absence and told them he’d had an emergency come up.

She’d had to lie to them. Dammit! All she’d done from the beginning was lie and keep secrets, and she hated that. She hit the pillow again and then heaved it across the room.

This was pathetic. She was pathetic. Punching pillows and throwing things. Acting like a child. Where in the hell was Brooke Adams?

She grabbed her day planner and got down to business. She needed a plan to get herself back on track.

MY DAY

Sleep log:

Intentionally left blank

Noteworthy Dreams:

Intentionally left blank

Weather:

Sunny, mid-70s

Affirmations:

Remember who you are!

She wanted to hunch over as she reviewed the rest of her day planner. Axel’s presence filled it. God, he took up a lot of time. Well, that would have to go. Today was Nanine’s reopening! She’d kept her commitments light, wanting to be available to Madison, Nanine, and her roommates.

But still, she had time blocked off to work with Axel. She hadn’t heard from him after she’d gone home, and finally at three in the morning, she’d turned her phone off because it was driving her crazy to keep waiting for it to chirp. Lying there waiting for a text or call from a man wasn’t what she wanted.

Been there.

Done that.

Total waste of time and energy.

Turning back to her day planner, she dug out an eraser pen to clear his name from her day and then filled it in with what she could control. She was going to load up until she knew for certain what in the hell was going to happen between her and Axel!

Priorities:

Get myself back together.

Ensure Nanine’s reopening is a success.

Be available to everyone regarding the reopening.
