She gestured in the air as the elevator slowly descended. “It’s hard to describe. A little scared. A little vulnerable. Then she fell back into Madison. But for a moment there, when she hugged him, and he hugged her, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen.”
“Wait!” He grabbed her arm and pulled her up short. “She hugged Kyle? Like voluntarily?”
God, he was so right about something going on between them.
“Yeah.” She lifted a shoulder. “It was kinda sweet and a little heartbreaking. He turned red.”
“Red? Golden Boy Kyle, who does everything perfectly?”
She swatted him.
He rubbed his arm. “Okay, I deserved that.”
“And don’t think you’re off the hook about my earlier worries.” He saw that well enough in her narrowed eyes. “Dean, I want you to be careful here. I don’t want you to get hurt. Or for anything to put our goal of getting the cave in jeopardy.”
He crossed his heart. “I promise I’ll be careful and don’t worry. I’ll do everything in my power to replace Nanine’s cave.”
She nodded as the elevator deposited them on the second floor.
Sounds of arguing reached them when they alighted.
“That’s Madison and Kyle,” Brooke said, rushing toward them.
Trouble in paradise already?
Dean hurried after Brooke down the hall. When they entered the room the noise was issuing from, Madison was standing in Kyle’s face. “I don’t care if the sun comes up in the morning in this room. I want you to take the bigger room. I’ll put up curtains or something.”
“I’m telling you!” Kyle yelled back. “You’re having this room, and that’s it!”
“You’re not the boss of me.”
“In this I am. Stop being stubborn. You’ll be happier in a room that doesn’t have the sunrise throwing itself in your face every morning. It just makes sense.”
“You’re being ridiculous!” she shouted at him, poking his chest with a finger.
Dean grabbed Brooke’s hand in shock. Should they intervene?
“What’s gotten into you?” Madison raved. “First the kitchen and now this. I didn’t even pay for this house. Not anything. I shouldn’t be living here. This is the sort of place Paisley would live in. Not me.”
Kyle went stony. Dean thought for sure that shit was about to hit the fan, but his friend surprised him by stalking past them and leaving without a word.
Brooke gaped at him, wide-eyed, as if to ask what had just happened.
Hell if he knew. Why would their attraction for each other make them this crazy?
Madison gestured wildly to the room. “I don’t need a room this big,” she said, sounding almost panicked. “I’ve never had a room this big. Why doesn’t he understand?”
They both shook their heads at the same time.
“God!” She pulled her black hair and gave a shriek. “Why is he being so nice to me?”
Her black high-tops clopped as she stormed out of the room.
Dean looked at Brooke with a grimace. “Well, that’s not good.”
“Intense emotion makes them crazy, obviously,” Brooke surmised.
Or else it was sexual tension hitting a breaking point, but he knew better than to put that out there.
