Chapter Twenty-One

She was getting married.

Megan still couldn’t believe it.

She rolled over in bed and put her hand on Kade’s chest, loving the feel of his skin as much as the sight of his grandmother’s ring on her finger.Herring.

They’d dropped Ryan off and left Ollie with Angie and Carrick after sharing the happy news, which had made Angie squeal “You’re getting married!” so loudly both Carrick and Ollie had plugged their fingers in their ears. Back at the cottage, Megan had asked Kade to see a picture of his grandmother. The request had seemed to please him, and he’d brought down a dusty photobook from the bookshelves around the hearth.

His grandmother’s smile hinted at hard times laced with good humor, and her eyes were kind.

Just like Megan’s fiancé’s.

“I feel like I’m dreaming,” she said as he rose up to caress her cheek.

“You wake from dreams.” He kissed her ever so softly on the lips. “This isn’t a dream. But we might find our clothes. I have a feeling word of our engagement is making the rounds. People will be popping by.”

Her body felt like singing crystal, and she didn’t want the sensation to end. “For the first time in my life I’m going to say I don’t care and stay in bed with you a little longer. I suddenly have great compassion for Bets and Donal and their doorbell fiasco.”

His brow rose above sparkling brown eyes. “Well, Megan Bennet… I believe your transformation is complete. I’ll just leave a note on the door in case anyone comes, saying we’re down at the shore. Either it will keep them occupied or they’ll leave. Either way, I imagine it will give us plenty of time for what I think you have in mind. Be right back.”

When he returned to bed, lowering down next to her, she slid her bare foot over his calf. The sensation was utterly delicious—and so was his body’s answering response. “Kade, how do you feel aboutThe Kama Sutra?”

“I’m mostly in favor of it, not knowing the particulars and the like. Why?”

“Your mother gave a book to Bets that I peeked at a month or so ago.” She smiled when she realized she wasn’t reddening in the cheeks from embarrassment the way she had in the bathroom that night.

Kade laughed out loud. “My father mentioned a book my mother had brought home, and I wondered. They’ve been having a renewal in their relationship lately, and it’s been good to see.” His face turned contemplative. “Sometimes I feel hopeful for our relationship, my dad’s and mine, but then I remember how we want different things.”

She smoothed the brown hair back from his forehead. “If anyone can heal someone’s heart, it’s you. You do it all the time.”

He smiled ruefully. “Isn’t it the craic that I can’t do it with my own father? But enough of that talk. I believe you had plans for me this morning.”

In his bed, she felt bolder than she’d ever imagined possible. “I thought you might like this.”

She wrapped her hand around his arousal.

He groaned and pushed into her hand. “I do. What else might you have in mind, I wonder?”

She guided him onto his back and smiled into his grinning face. “How about I show you?”

“I’ve been waiting for it since I awoke to the sounds of your soft snoring.”

“I wasnotsnoring!” Her cheeks finally reddened.

“It was adorable,” he said, grabbing her waist with both of his large hands. “Especially after you got pissed last night, drinking so many of Ryan’s cocktails.”

Even though she knew he was teasing, she still picked up a pillow and tossed it at him. “I was celebrating! Plus, they’re the best cocktails I’ve ever had.”

“Ouch!” He mimed a stab to the heart. “Ryan does make better cocktails, but thankfully not enough for you to run away with him.”

“I’d never leave you,” she said, her voice filled with conviction.

He took her left hand and kissed the ring on her finger. “Nor I you. You crossed an ocean to be with me, love. We were meant to be. And I’ll love you for as long as I take breath.”

She leaned over him and traced his jaw. “And I you. Let me love you now.”

After covering him with a condom, she lowered onto him and took him inside her, moving slowly at first, loving his groans and the moment the smile on his face shifted into a pleasant line of tension. That same tension was growing inside her. She picked up the pace, letting her head fall back. One of his hands cupped her breast while the other pressed where they were joined. She cried out, flying back into the clouds, and heard his answering call.
