Megan and Kade and the others had a few drinks at Jamie’s small cottage, joined by the McGrath twins. They followed a similar pattern on Christmas Day. Kade joined her and Ollie to see what Santa had brought him. Afterward, they met Angie and Carrick at Bets’ house for a late Christmas brunch and to open gifts. The tension with her parents was noticeable, but they got through it. The Lucky Charms and their husbands arrived to take over and help Bets so she and the others could go off to Angie and Carrick’s for more holiday cheer.
When they finally returned to her cottage, Kade carried a sleeping Ollie into his room, giving Megan an opportunity to retrieve the gift she’d wanted him to open while they were alone together.
When they nestled together on her small settee, she handed it to him.
He kissed her even before seeing it, which touched her deeply. After laying the bright red wrapping paper he’d torn apart aside, he opened the box. She saw his throat move and was equally affected.
“It seems we had a similar theme for our gifts,” she whispered.
Lifting out the sculpture of the white horse she’d made, he ran his hands over the curves she’d lovingly made from clay. “My God, Megan. It’s beautiful. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
“It’s not only because you love horses.” She put her hand on his arm, and their eyes met. “It’s because you’ve been my white knight, my champion in all things. My love.”
A smile shot across his face. “You saved the best for last. Being yourmhuirnín dílisis all I want to be, and Megan, you make that easier than you’ll ever know. Although one day soon, I hope you know the full truth of it.”
She wanted to know the truth of it all the way to her soul. Sorcha’s warning came to mind and she shivered. As she cupped his jaw and pulled him down for a kiss, she felt a powerful stirring in her heart.
Kade would say there was something in the wind.
She felt it.
Only she didn’t yet know what it was.
