“Not since she called me a week ago.”

“I don’t get it,” Logan says as he sips on his Diet Coke. “Aren’t you remodeling the grounds at the school?”

“Yeah.”

“Then how do you go an entire week without seeing her or talking to her?”

I glance down the table at Krew, making sure he isn’t listening, but he’s playing tic-tac-toe on his menu with Boston.

“First of all, we’re both working when we’re at the school, not socializing. And second, with Fall Break, it was a short week. I only had three days when I could’ve seen her.”

Logan picks up his cheeseburger but hesitates before taking a bite. “I forgot about Fall Break. Ours is next week.”

“I think you should ask her out,” Hillary says.

“It’s not that easy. I can’t date her because of the whole job thing.”

“Is the job thing reallythatbig of a deal?” Logan’s words are muffled by the food in his mouth. Manners are apparently not his thing. “So what if she gets fired?”

Hillary turns to him. “It would be a big deal to me. I wouldn’t want to lose my job over a guy.”

“Not even for me?” A piece of lettuce falls out of his mouth, landing on the table.

Hillary grimaces and pushes him away. “I would for you because I know everything worked out between us, but Meg doesn’t know that with Tyler.”

“Can’t you just talk to Diane?” Logan asks. “She’s the one responsible for implementing the rule. Maybe if you go to her and explain that you and Meg are the real deal, she’ll work with you.”

“Yeah,” Hillary adds. “They could move Krew to a different class.”

“I’ve thought about talking to Diane. I only hesitate because if she doesn’t agree, I don’t want to get Meg in trouble. I need to be sure that Meg feels the same way I do before I open that door.”

Hillary leans forward. “Show her what’s possible between you two. Make her feel confident enough in your relationship to risk her job over you.”

“How do I do that without dating?”

“I don’t know.” She shrugs, taking a bite of her taco.

I don’t know either.

I look back at the boys, and my eyes glance out the window to a car that looks a lot like Meg’s pulling into a parking stall. I stretch my neck, trying to get a good look at the woman stepping out of the car, walking to the restaurant.

It’s definitely Meg.

“Hey! Hey!” I snap in front of Hillary and Logan’s faces. “I need you guys to do me a favor.” I push my plate away as I watch Meg walk to theTo Gosection of the building.

“What’s wrong?” Hillary asks, following my eyes.

“I need you guys to take Krew home with you after dinner.”

Logan wipes his mouth with his napkin. “Why? Where are you going?”

I lower my voice like it’s a big secret. “Meg's here.”

“What do you mean she’s here?” Hillary starts, looking around. “I want to see what she looks like.”

“You just missed her. She's picking up food, and I'm going to go pretend like I'm picking up an order too.” I stand, pushing my chair back.

Logan clearly can’t keep up. “But you already have your food.”
