Beverly raises her shoulder. “She said you went on a blind date.”
“I didn’t realize you and Diane were such good friends.”
“Well, I’m one of the members of the parent-teacher association on the PTA at the school. And Diane and I have gotten to know each other really well whenever shecomes to support Krew at these baseball games.”
“I see.”
“Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that if you’re dating again, I’d like to throw my name in the hat.” Her smile turns flirty, and her finger trails down my forearm. “Let me know if you’re interested.”
She glances at Wayne and Logan one last time, then turns to go.
We stand there in silence, looking straight ahead until Logan finally laughs. “‘I love third base?’”
“Shut up,” I say.
Wayne coughs, trying to hide his amusement.
“Do you want to run after her and set something up for later tonight?” Logan teases. “I’ll even offer to watch Krew.”
“You’re going to Hillary’s grandma’s house, remember?”
“Oh, I’m sure Hillary won’t mind if Krew tags along. Especially once I tell her about how Beverly tickled your arm.”
“She didnottickle my arm.”
Wayne nods. “She did.”
“That arm tickle is more action than Tyler’s had in years,” Logan jokes.
I eye my brother as I lift up my baseball hat and smooth my hair out. “That’s not entirely true. I kissed Meg last night,” I say coolly.
Wayne takes off his hat and throws it onto the ground. “What?”
Logan shoves me. “You little dog. You’ve been holding out on us.”
“How was it?” Wayne asks.
I keep my eyes straight ahead. “It was all right.”
It was definitely more than all right.
Both men laugh and shove me even harder, and I can’t help but smile.
“I can’t believe this.” Logan shakes his head. “I never thought the day would come.”
Wayne points at me. “You need to kiss her again.”
“Nope. I can’t.”
Logan’s expression drops. “Oh. Did you feel guilty because of Kristen or something?”
I’d assumed I would feel guilty afterward, as if I were somehow cheating on Kristen, but I didn’t. If anything, I felt more at peace than I have in a long time, like I’m finally living my life after two years of numbness.
It’s nice to feel alive again.
“No, that’s not the reason.” I shake my head. “I can’t kiss Meg again because she’s not supposed to date a parent of a student. It’s in her contract, and me kissing her was kind of a jerk thing to do when I already know that nothing can ever happen between us.”
“That sucks,” Wayne says.
