I cover my mouth like I need to hide the evidence of our kiss. “I’ll just go grab all of my stuff.”

Twenty minutes later, we’re at the school parking lot with both car engines running.

 “Thanks for jumping my battery.”

“It was no problem.” His fingers reach for mine as he glances back at Krew in his truck. “I want to kiss you, but—”

 “I get it.”

“I’m not sure I’ll see you again this weekend, but can I call you sometime…preferably when he’s asleep?”

 I smile. “I’d like that.”

I sink down into my car, and Tyler pushes the door shut.

For the first time in my life, I’m grateful for car trouble and everything it led to.

 * * *

Meg:I need to tell you guys something.

I paceback and forth at the foot of the bed, waiting for one of my siblings to respond.

 Matt:Then tell us.

Brooke:I think she’s trying to leave us in suspense.

Tessa:Let me guess. You finally kissed Tyler again.

My steps pause. I hate it when Tessa is right.

Meg:Yes, we kissed again, but that isn’t what I need to tell you. We’re dating…in secret. No one is supposed to know or else I will get fired, so you can’t tell anyone.

Brooke:If no one is supposed to know, why are you telling us?

 Tessa:Because she feels guilty.

Matt:Look at Meg breaking the rules. I need to meet this guy.

 Meg:Am I a terrible person?

 Tessa:Yes.

 Brooke:No.

 Matt:Maybe.

I can always count on my siblings to make me feel better…or worse.

Brooke:So is the whole dead wife thing weird for you?

Meg:No. Why would it be weird for me?

My mind flashes back to the glimpses of Kristen in Tyler’s house—her clothes in his closet, a pair of her shoes in the cubby by the laundry room, pictures in frames—but I quickly push those reminders out of my thoughts.

Tessa:I just hope you know what you’re doing. This seems like a tricky situation for someone like you.

 Someone like me?
