“What do you want in your future?” It was a question he probably shouldn’t ask. He might be disappointed with her answer.

Sydria shrugged. “Someone who will sit and watch the waves with me until they stop.”

Marx smiled. “That seems doable enough.”

She glanced away, shyness taking over her expression.

“Just so you know,” he said, wanting to clear the air, “I had to say that back in Doctor Moore’s office.”

Her head lifted. “Say what?”

“You know, the whole consummating the marriage thing.”

“Oh,” she said, suppressing a smile.

“Doctor Moore is my father’s doctor, and if word got back to him that we haven’t…you know…our entire plan might be ruined.”

That, and my reputation.

“True.”

Marx raised his shoulders. “I never think about consummating the marriage.” He tilted his head back and forth. “I mean, notnever. It’s not like I’veneverthought about it.” He threw his hands out as if he were guilty. “I’ve thought about it. Okay? But I don’tthinkabout it. Unlessyouwant to think about it, then we can.”

Sydria smiled.

Why couldn’t Marx keep his mouth shut?

He scratched the back of his neck. “I mean, doyouever think about it?”

She laughed.

“Just kidding. Don’t answer that question.” He glanced out at the view, freaked out by the last ten seconds of his life. “So, good news from the doctor, right?” That was his not-so-subtle way of changing the subject.

“I think so.” Sydria raised a shoulder. “But we really didn’t learn anything new.”

“Sure we did. We learned that you’re in excellent health.” He peeked back at her. “And we learned that you have a scar.”

“I already knew that.”

“I didn’t.”

“It’s not usually something I tell people.”

“Where is it?”

“Somewhere you can’t see.”

“Come on! I’m your husband,” he joked.

“Myfakehusband.”

He couldn’t argue with that.

“We also found out that you’ve had some memories.”

She pulled back on the railing. “A few.”

“Do you want to tell me about them?” He watched her face closely, looking for any sign of hesitation. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
