Dannyn’s mouth dropped in disbelief. “Who am I?” she said, getting in his face. “Who areyou?” Her finger landed on the middle of the king of Tolsten’s chest. “You can’t even help me save my brother.”
Kase grabbed her shoulders, pulling her back from Drake. “This is Dannyn McKane, the princess of Cristole.”
“Ah, now I see why she’s so passionate,” Drake said as his lips turned into a frown.
Myka looked at Dannyn. “During deliberation, I tried to change everyone’s opinions, but Stoddard’s and Von’s testimonies were compelling.”
King Ezra walked up, joining the group. He combed a hand through his hair. “I hate executions.”
“This is your fault!” Dannyn snapped at him.
Ezra was taken aback, and he looked at Drake.
“Trev, meet Dannyn McKane, King Marx’s sister,” Drake said.
“Oh.” Ezra shifted nervously. “I’m sorry about your brother.”
“You should be. My brother is innocent.”
“The evidence proved otherwise.”
“Stoddard is a liar and a murderer!” Dannyn’s chest puffed up and down with anger as she spoke.
Myka folded her arms across her chest. “He killed my father by smothering him with a pillow.”
“Because he’s a murderer,” Dannyn said, pleading her case to the queen. Right now, she was her only ally. “He’s lying about that and everything else.”
Kase glanced at Myka. “Stoddard wrote that letter about you, saying that you knew where the weapons were and that you were hiding them.”
“I know,” Myka agreed.
“He forged letters and signatures back then, and he could’ve easily done that same thing now to frame Marx,” Kase said.
Drake nodded. “That’s true. He’s known for the lies he’s told in the past.”
Queen Renna walked up, grabbing Ezra’s hand.
“There you are,” Ezra said. “Are you feeling alright?”
“Yes.” She let out a heavy breath, patting her pregnant stomach. “Sorry. I couldn’t get myself out of bed this morning for the trial.”
Myka smiled. “That’s understandable. You’re due to have a baby in two weeks.”
Dannyn grew impatient. “I’m sorry, but can we get back to my brother and what we’re going to do about him?”
“What happened at the trial?” Renna looked at the group expectantly.
“Stoddard, Doctor Von, and King Marx were all found guilty.”
Renna inhaled. “King Marx, too? Who found him guilty?”
“Your step-father and your husband,” Dannyn sneered.
Renna’s eyes widened, and she turned to Ezra. “You found Marx guilty?”
“I did what I thought was best.”
“Trev, I think you’re projecting your own guilt and regret about Seran onto this trial,” Myka said. Drake raised an eyebrow at her as if he disapproved of what she’d said to his best friend. “What? King Bryant thinks I’m projecting my own issues onto the verdict. If I am, then surely Trev is too.”
