Seran laughed. “It’s good to see you guys too.” She looked at Renna’s warm smile, and it immediately reminded her of Dannyn, making her feel instantly at home in her presence. “Come in more,” she said, waving them to her.

Renna sat down on the edge of the bed, and Ezra pulled over a chair, taking a seat.

Seran looked between the two of them. “You guys look so happy. Everything worked out exactly as it should have.”

“Well, not exactly.” Trev grimaced. “You got shot.”

Renna’s mouth dropped open in disbelief as she stared back at him.

“Was that too soon?” he asked. “Should I have waited five more minutes to bring up the obvious?”

Seran smiled. “It’s actually kind of refreshing. Everyone around here walks on eggshells around me. It’s getting really old.”

Renna placed a hand on her arm. “I don’t know how much you remember, but I want to apologize again.” She looked at Ezra. “Wewant to apologize for everything that happened. It was never our intention to hurt you, but we did.”

“Especially me,” Ezra said. “I’m sorry for the many ways I hurt you. I’m so ashamed of how things ended.” His eyes filled to the brim with moisture. “I was about to call off the wedding.”

Seran bit her lip, trying to remain composed. “I know.” Her lips pulled into a soft smile. “I’m so glad that you were strong enough to do that…because I wasn’t. You were setting me free, and I’ll always be grateful to you for that. And,” she said, placing her hand on top of his, “thank you for jumping in front of me when the gun was fired.”

“You remember that?” he asked.

She nodded.

He shook his head. “It didn’t help.”

“But you did it.”

They stared at each other for a long moment, closing the door of the past.

“I’ll let you two catch up,” Ezra said, standing. “It’s so good to see you, Seran.”

“You too.”

He smiled, then turned and left.

Seran watched his retreating back. Seeing Ezra had healed a wound inside her. Forgiveness had been given, and a big piece of her heart felt like it had been mended back together.

She turned her gaze to Renna, smiling. “You’re having a baby.”

“Yes…soon.” Renna patted her stomach.

“Was it a good idea for you to travel so late in your pregnancy?” Seran asked.

“When I heard you were alive, there was nothing that could have stop me from coming to see you.”

“You look beautiful. Happier than I remember you.”

“I am.” Her eyes dropped. “But I feel like I’m happy at your expense.”

Seran took her hand, prompting Renna to look up. “It’s not at my expense. Ezra and I never would have been happy together. I knew it then, and I know it now.” She smiled, thinking about Marx. “I need a man who balances my serious side. Who challenges me to do things I would never think of but lets me do them on my own. He must be strong but vulnerable. Give me confidence and let me build him up too.” She shrugged. “Ezra and I didn’t have that kind of relationship.”

“That is a very well-thought anddetailedlist.” Renna gave her a knowing look. “Did you have that kind of relationship with someone else?”

Seran bit her lip. She hadn’t talked about her feelings for Marx with anyone. Even Dannyn didn’t have the whole story. She hadn’t seen Renna in a year and a half, had only remembered her a few days ago, and even before her accident, they hadn’t been close, but for some reason, she wanted to open up to her.

“I did,” Seran said, fidgeting with her hands in her lap. “That’s how things were with Marx.”

Renna raised her brows. “Marx McKane? The man you were forced to marry?”
