Myka’s cool blue eyes landed on Marx. “Not guilty.”

He gave her a thankful nod.

“King Davin, what’s your vote?”

Davin studied Marx as if he were undecided. “Not guilty,” he finally said.

Maybe it would be a tie.

“King Ezra?”

Marx fidgeted with his fingers, unsure how King Ezra would vote. He’d married the woman Ezra was supposed to marry. There had to be some feelings. Heck, Marx had unresolvedfeelingstoward the king of Albion, mostly the jealous kind.

Ezra clasped his hand together in front of him. “Guilty.”

Dannyn gasped behind him and the room tensed.

Well, that answered the question of whether King Ezra had unresolved feelings toward Marx.

Bryant looked at the last two kings. “King Reddick?”

The king from Appa leaned forward in his chair. “I think he’s lying. I vote guilty.”

Murmurs expanded throughout the room as Marx swallowed.

Things weren’t looking good.

“King Hilton?” Bryant said, looking at the man next to him.

Hilton narrowed his eyes on him, a look that couldn’t be good. “Guilty.”

The room seemed to still as all eyes set on King Bryant. He was the last one. If Bryant voted not guilty, forcing a tie, then Marx would be free.

Bryant swept his eyes over the spectators. “Both Doctor Von’s and Commander Stoddard’s testimonies were solid. I don’t see how they could have corroborated their stories unless what they said was true. Therefore,” his eyes bounced to him, “I find King Marxguilty.”

His stomach fell.

The crowd erupted in noise.

“Quiet! Quiet!” Bryant said, standing.

Two New Hope guards pulled Marx up from his seat.

“Marx McKane, the Council of Essentials finds you guilty. You are to be taken immediately to the square for execution.”

Princess Dannyn McKane

Dannyn and Kase stood outside the meeting room of the Government Center as the arrangements for the execution were being set up in the square. They needed to find somebody who could help them save Marx. Time was running out.

“Drake, you know they’re making a mistake,” Kase said, pleading with the king and queen of Tolsten. “Can’t you guys do something?”

“We’ve done all we could do.” Drake turned to his wife. “Myka votednot guilty.”

“Then tell me who can do something!” Dannyn burst. She was sick of these rulers acting like her brother’s life wasn’t worth something.

Everyone looked at her, and Drake narrowed his eyes. “I’m sorry, who are you?”
