Thirty
Alex was leaning on her elbow, naked, watching Nicole, also naked. Nicole was lying next to her in bed, staring at the ceiling. Her mouth was hanging open. She lookedshocked.
‘Is everything OK over there?’ Alex asked her.
‘Yeah, I’m just… reconfiguring some stuff. About what sex should be,’ Nicole said, still stunned.
Alex smiled. ‘So, you’re happy?’
Nicole turned to look at her. ‘I don’t think I should answer that question.’
‘Why not?’
‘Because if I do, I’m going to give you the kind of rave review that might very well scare the hell out of you.’
Alex chuckled, delighted. ‘Wow.’
‘That’s the word I was looking for. Wow.’ Nicole laughed. ‘I think I should probably leave it at that.’
Alex was thrilled that she’d made Nicole happy, though she wasn’t counting her chickens. She knew that Nicole’s bar must have been lowered in the last ten years. It wouldn’t be hard to hop over it. Still, it was nice to know Nicole was feeling good.
Then Nicole started to look troubled. She gave Alex a rather serious look. ‘You’re the first woman I’ve ever been with.’
‘Oh. Oh.Oh. I didn’t know that,’ Alex said, her surprise growing.
‘You didn’t? I mean, you didn’t guess or anything?’ Nicole asked.
‘No, I most certainly did not.’ Alex squinted suspiciously at Nicole. ‘But I mean, are you sure? Not even once?’
‘No, why?’ Nicole asked.
‘I just mean… It didn’t feel like you didn’t know what to… I mean, did you google it or anything?’
Nicole giggled, embarrassed. ‘I actually did. This afternoon during shooting. Not that I thought we were going to…’ She smiled shyly. ‘But I just needed to know that if wedid, I wouldn’t leave you high and dry. So to speak. I found some pretty helpful resources. Though a lot of it was pretty obvious. I mean, I’ve got my own… Well, you know.’ She looked away awkwardly.
‘I was, in no sense, dry,’ Alex told her emphatically. ‘It was wow for me too.’
Alex decided to say no more than that, though she could have. It would have been all too easy to go off the deep end if she kept talking. Not just about how good the sex had felt, but more than that, the depth of emotion in it.
Alex would never dream of throwing around the big L this soon, but she could feel it, the start of love. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d liked someone this goddamn much. Her last relationship had never felt like that, even in the beginning.
But Nicole was not Jen. She made Alex feel… How to describe it? Nicole had given her the perfect words. She felt so good to be around. Right.
No doubt about it, if Alex started letting her mouth run off, she was gonna say something incredibly stupid. Better to just smile and keep her mouth shut.
‘Oh my God, we need to get some sleep,’ Nicole said.
‘Really? You’re tired?’ Alex said, hopefully.
Nicole took the hint. ‘Not that tired, I guess.’

‘Zeke? Let’s just take a second,’ Nicole was telling one of the actors in a bedroom scene.
Zeke paused and looked over at Nicole from on top of one of his co-stars, Max. ‘Something up?
‘Maybe hop off Max?’ Nicole suggested.
