‘Oh, yeah. Sure thing,’ Gina said, happy with how breezy it sounded.
‘Be seeing you,’ Harper said and vanished back around the door.
Olivia’s head appeared through the other door. ‘Hey!’
It was way too many surprise heads, and she jumped. ‘Christ!’
‘So, that turned out OK,’ Olivia told her.
‘That’s amazing,’ Gina said. ‘Brenda seemed pretty edgy when she walked in. I wasn’t sure if I should get security.’
‘I thought I was going to get an actual slap from Brenda for a second there,’ Olivia admitted. ‘Because I had to tell them that lie. I hate that kind of shit.’
‘It’s what you had to do,’ Gina said.
‘It nearly backfired,’ Olivia said anxiously. ‘But I think I managed to get things back on course.’
‘I didn’t doubt you would,’ Gina said honestly.
‘The share price is dropping, but we knew that would happen,’ Olivia said. ‘I just need to prove Michael was the only problem.’
‘How are you going to do that?’ Gina asked, very interested.
Olivia frowned. ‘I’m gonna have to go after him.’
Gina raised an eyebrow. ‘What will that look like?’
‘I’m getting a forensic accountant in. When we know what we’re dealing with, I’m going to have to sue him.’
Gina slumped in her chair. ‘God.’
‘I know,’ Olivia nodded darkly. ‘I hate it. But I don’t know how else to save this place.’
It was strange, Michael had made his own poor choices but Gina couldn’t help but pity what he was going through and how much worse it would get. But he’d made his bed.
‘Oh, by the way, could you send flowers for me?’ Olivia asked.
‘Who to?’
‘Harper,’ Olivia said.
Gina raised an eyebrow. ‘Not Brenda?’
‘No, this is… Put it on my credit card. It’s not a business thing.’
Gina felt abruptly uneasy. ‘Oh?’
‘Yeah. Oh and…’ Olivia chuckled nervously. ‘Could you do me a huge favour? I know you’re good with the written word and everything.’
‘What do you mean? You just talked your way into Brenda’s good graces. And she hadmurderin her eyes.’
‘I can talk to people fine about work, but something happens when I have to do, you know, the personal stuff. I get too much in my head. I want you to write the card for me.’
‘To say what?’
‘I’m asking her out.’
‘Oh.’
