Keira half smiled. ‘OK, I’m off. You cool to be on alert tomorrow morning?’

‘If you’re going to rock Jane’s world, I’ve got no other choice but to save her from falling in love with you, have I?’ Alanna grinned.

Keira stuck a thumb up and left.

Alanna was still swimming in astonishment at what she’d just watched unfold. She went into the kitchen to make herself a stir-fry. She was laughing to herself as she imagined this poor girl who didn’t know what she was in for, a night with a sexual ninja.

As she sat eating her dinner, she chuckled. Imagine a few orgasms making you think someone was the one? How good would those orgasms have to be to convince you to pursue someone as emotionally unavailable as Keira?

Really. How good?

Was this the kind of orgasm that Alanna was able to give herself? Or was it something only someone else could do? Benjamin had been a write-off in that department, but some of her previous partners had done alright. Were they that type of good?

Or were they the kind of orgasms that Alanna hadneverknown? What a thought. That there was the kind of sex that Alanna had never been able to experience, for whatever reason. Was it that she wasn’t capable? Or was it only that she’d never found someone who could deliver in the way Keira apparently did? Alanna wondered what that kind of sex would feel like. Could you have it with a person you had no emotional connection with? Was it truly only a matter of skill? You just knew the right buttons to hit and bang? Hello nirvana?

It couldn’t be all that simple. How good could a person really be? How good couldKeirareally be?

Fourteen

Keira was pretty surprised to find that living with Alanna was turning out alright. She might even be tempted to call it nice. It had been kind of fun swiping with her. Keira had friends throughout her life, but they tended to be casual acquaintances. She’d always liked it that way. She liked to keep a wall around herself. She was happy behind that wall.

But then Alanna was there, and it just happened. Sharing. Kind of nice.

She’d thought there was a chance she was being stupid inviting Alanna back into her flat after the way things had started, but they ironed out the kinks, so to speak. Alanna was a fabulous safety net. Even though she didn’t always need her, it was good to know she was there. Waiting to catch Keira if she fell into the arms of a love-struck girl.

All in all, the situation was working.

But Keira didn’t see it lasting. How could it? Eventually, Alanna would move forward and out of Keira’s place. She’d probably get married, do that whole thing. People like Alanna always got around to it eventually. In fact, given the age she was at, Keira would have bet serious money that Alanna would probably settle down for a good long while, maybe forever, with the next person she dated. That was how it worked—for everyone else.

Even the women Keira slept with who seemed just like her, in a couple of years, they’d do the same. Step onto that ark.

That was fine. Keira didn’t care what anyone else did, particularly right now, walking into Liquid, because she was about to… Oh shit. She was actually about to get catfished.

‘Hi,’ said a short, nervous-looking girl. It was Kelly from Amazon. It had taken a broken window, but Keira had managed to remember her name this time.

Keira sighed. ‘That wasn’t your picture.’

‘No, sorry.’

‘That was silly.’ Keira turned to leave.

‘What are you doing on the app, anyway? You’re taken,’ Kelly said defensively.

Keira paused. ‘I made a mistake and I’m going home to Alanna right now.’ She turned to leave again.

‘What, she’s still just waiting for you? Sheforgaveyou?’ Kelly spat.

‘Yeah,’ Keira said. ‘She did.’ She turned again.

‘You won’t stay? Just for a minute?’ Kelly begged.

Keira turned back, almost laughing. ‘Why would I do that?’

‘Because I want to apologise. For the window.’

‘You could have done that by text, a note, any other way than this.’

Kelly looked forlorn. ‘I was just going to… I wanted you to understand. I felt like I needed to talk to you one-on-one.’
