“Because despite growing up in this small town, surrounded by all the Sophies and Kyles, you’re still authenticallyyou. It took me leaving to discover who I was outside of this place and its people, while you found yourself within it.” His thumb swept across my chin, sapphire eyes flicking between mine before shifting down to my lips.
With my heart lodged firmly in my throat, I had to swallowhardto push it back where it needed to be before I did something stupid—like lean across the console that separated us and kiss the man who had me feeling so foolish. Mustering all the sanity I could gather, I gently pulled away from his grasp and opened my door. “Thanks for dinner.”
His hand dropped between us, a melancholy smile lifting the corners of his mouth as he nodded solemnly. “Goodnight, Magnolia.”
“Night.”
I breathed deeply as I closed the car door and walked up the porch steps. Once safely inside, I leaned against the door and pulled out my phone.

Don’t forget to put a bid in on that house.
Peering out the window framing the front entryway, I watched as confusion creased Taylor’s brow while he pulled his phone from the stand on his dash. Mine pinged in my hand, and I couldn’t suppress the grin spreading across my face as I glanced down at my screen.
Taylor
So you did snoop. *smirking face emoji*

Adding my number to your phone and yours to mine is not snooping; it’s being proactive.
Plus, I figured this would be easier than you messaging the shop when you have more house questions.
Taylor
I’m going to use this for far more than house questions.

I couldn’t suppress the smile on my face no matter how hard I tried. Despite myself, I had actually enjoyed tonight. The fact that he was so determined to get to know me for me should not have been as endearing as it was, but alas, the bar for men was belowthe depths of hell, and that one minuscule amount of effort put him firmly above ground level.
