“He really is. He’s never coddled me, but he’s also never been cruel. He’s extremely respected by all the soldiers and guards. He treats everyone with respect and expects it in return. I’m extremely grateful for everything that he’s done for my family, and my people.”

Silence settled over them before he turned to Auraelia, confusion marring his features. “If he’s a member of the Court of Opal, how is he Commander of the Queen’s Guard?”

“Ah, that. Well, the short answer is that my mother asked if he wanted to stay, and he said yes.” A small smile graced her face. “The long answer is more complicated. When my mother saw the wonderful job that he was doing with Xander, Piper, and myself, and saw the difference in her own guard, she asked him if he would want to stay. He agreed, but it also meant clearing it with the Lord and Lady of Opal.”

“But your mother is a queen.”

“She is, but she doesn’t stay queen by taking things from the courts. Ultimately, it was Ser Aeron’s choice to stay or go. She would never keep him here if he wanted to leave. But she still wanted to extend the courtesy of asking the Court of Opal if they had any objections or needed any compensation for the loss of one of their greatest warriors. Diplomacy goes a long way, Prince Daemon. You should know that.” The last bit was said with a mocking lilt and a knowing smile.

“Touché, Princess.”

They ate the rest of their picnic alternating between contented silence and light conversation.

Daemon told her more about his family and Kalmeera while Auraelia countered with her own stories of her favorite places in Lyndaria.

When they finished their meal, Auraelia repacked the basket.

“Are you feeling better?”

“I am, thank you.”

What was once a comfortable silence was now heading into an awkward one. Neither of them sure of where to go from here.

“I–” they said in unison.

Auraelia smirked, “Go ahead.”

Daemon ran his fingers through his hair, his nerves standing on end. “I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“Ah, I kind of figured as much. You do have a kingdom to return to, after all.”

She wasn’t mad, and if anyone understood his duty to his family and people it was her. But still, it stung a little to hear her be so accepting of it.

When she stood, he felt his heart sink.

“I really should head back. I don’t want to be too late for the council meeting.”

“Can I see you later?” The question was rushed, anxious almost.

She shrugged one shoulder and smiled, “Sure, come find me after.”

He was about to say something in response, but just as he opened his mouth, Piper came barreling around the corner and across the training field to where they were.

“Aurae–Your Highness, we really need to get you to that meeting,” Piper said as she approached, eyes flitting back and forth between them.

When a look of clear disappointment briefly crossed her features, Daemon smirked.

“Yes, yes. I’m coming.” Auraelia took a few steps before she looked back over her shoulder, heat blazing in her eyes, “See you later?”

“I’ll come find you.”

After a quick nod, she started walking. She made it a few feet before she stopped once again, “Oh, and Daemon?” she hollered before she turned around to face him fully, a smile once again lighting up her face. “Thank you.” Before he could respond, she turned again, quickening her pace to catch up to her friend.

Leaving him to watch, as the two women linked arms, and walked back to the castle.
