"What's wrong?"
"There's been another incident."
My shoulders sagged with the weight of yet another person possibly being hurt. "Who now?"
"Someone attempted to snag Lucien on his way to school this morning."
Lucien was Kati and Easton's son. Last I had heard, he’d just turned fifteen and was enjoying his independence.
"Wasn't someone with him?"
Aaron shook his head. "Not exactly. It was while he was walking out to the bus. Thankfully Easton's been teaching Lucien martial arts, so he was able to fight off his abductor."
"Is Lucien able to identify him?"
"We're hoping so. He's working with Lyla now to get us a sketch. Hopefully this is the break we need."
"Doesn't this feel a little amateurish? I don't know anything about terrorists but I would think they would be more sophisticated than to break into your mother's house and punch her before running away. And now to attempt an abduction in broad daylight?"
"Idiot," Aaron hissed to himself. "We've been so focused on the data breach that we haven't even considered these might be two separate attacks."
Well, now I was confused. "What do you mean?"
"The sniper shot makes sense if the people behind it are associated with the last op my team ran."
"And the other two?" I asked.
"I need to run the suggestion by Maverick but I believe they might be completely separate incidents."
"So, two separate people are after your team?"
Aaron looked concerned when he answered. "It would appear so."
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Aaron
After the revelation I had at Valerie's shop, I rushed back to work, leaving Nolen to watch over things at Sophisticated Sheen. I needed to run the idea by Maverick, but instead, I walked in on Annalee arguing with Owen.
"Absolutely not."
"What do you mean, absolutely not? There's been three attacks in just as many days. You can't go out of the office unprotected," Owen demanded.
"I agreed you can come with me to the doctor's office but you're not coming into the exam room with me!"
"There could be a threat on your life! You're being unreasonable!"
Shots fired. Even I knew saying that to a woman wasn't a smart idea.
"Unreasonable?" The way Annalee said the one word made me think there was a good chance Owen was going to die today. "Aaron, is itunreasonablefor me to want to go into my exam by myself?"
Shit! I really didn't want to be in the middle of this argument but I didn't see a way to get out of it with my balls intact.
"I mean, Owen's right and there could be a threat on your life." Annalee looked at me like I was a bug she wanted to squish. "It's just a doctor's appointment, right?"
"Yeah, my once-a-yearladydoctor's appointment."
"Oh." Then it hit me. "Ohhhhh!" I looked over at Owen. "Man, just let her go alone. I don't know why you would want to go to that appointment anyway."
