"What did Nolen learn about him?"
"He has loose ties to theLos Cangriscartel."
Son of a bitch. That was the cartel that Lucien's biological father was the head of until he was murdered.
"Define loose?"
"Loose enough that he wasn't considered a previous member of the cartel but now is a threat to Lucien and possibly the rest of us."
That made sense.
"When do we go after him?"
There was no way Easton would let a threat to Lucien stand. My friend was extremely overprotective of the boy.
"He's gone off the grid. Nolen can't find him."
Of fucking course! Nothing could ever be easy.
"So, then, what's the plan?"
Maverick always had a plan and I was curious what it would be this time, since it appeared this Nathan Westworth wasn't just threatening Lucien and his family.
"Unfortunately, the only thing we can do is continue to keep everyone with a guard until the threat is taken care of."
I cursed beneath my breath just as Valerie walked into the living room. She gave me a questioning look. I mouthed back that I would explain, then finished my conversation with Maverick.
As soon as I hung up the phone, Valerie was asking, "Everything okay?" That seemed to be the theme song the last couple of days.
"They figured out who the guy was that attempted to kidnap Lucien."
I could see the interest on her face since she had a run-in with him, so I quickly explained. "His name is Nathan Westworth and he has a connection toLos Cangris."
"The cartel that tried to infiltrate the town?"
"The same one."
Valerie shook her head like she couldn't believe it. "I thought they were done after the head of the cartel died. At least that was what was reported."
"That's what we thought but this guy showing up and trying to take Lucien doesn't bode well."
The sad truth was that Lucien—as the firstborn son of a cartel leader—would always be in danger. Easton had his work cut out for him.
"What can we do?"
"We stay alert and don't drop our guard, no matter how long things stay quiet. Until we have this guy and find out what he wants with all of us, we stay alert."
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Valerie
It had been a month since anything new had happened, and as much as I wanted to believe everything was over, Vanessa was still acting strange.
She came to work each day she was scheduled and did her job, but gone was the usually bubbly worker I was used to seeing.
Oh, and she avoided being alone with me, whereas before everything went down, we used to always find time to stop and talk to each other.
Enough was enough.
