I force a smile onto my face and look at my friend. “I was daydreaming. What did you say?”

She loops her arm through mine. “You weren’t daydreaming, you were thinking about you know who!”

Boss looks in the rearview mirror at me. “So help me if I’m taking you to the Whistler to meet up with some guy, I’m turning around, Alice.”

I roll my eyes and lean forward and address him with his real name. “You’re his boss, Ben. His boss. He’s supposed to be scared of you, not the other way around.”

He blows out a breath. “He’s unhinged when it comes to you. I know it. Hell, we all know it. You all just need to get your heads out of your asses and get together because this shit is wearing me out.”

Lexi laughs beside him, but I’m not finding the humor in it. “Please, he doesn’t think of me that way. He treats me like I’m some pesky little sister that he has to babysit.”

I try to act like I’m not bothered by it, but the truth is, it does bother me. I like Greyson—hell, I’m in love with him, and it kills me a little more each day that I’m more of an assignment to him than anything else. The Pres said to protect me, and that’s what he does.

Ben parks on the street in front of the Whiskey Whistler. He turns in his seat and looks me right in the eye. “That man loves you, Alice. He may not want to, but he does.”

Before I can say anything, he’s getting out of the car and rounding it to get to Lexi.

Emily giggles next to me. “Come on. Let’s go, birthday girl.”

We walk into the Whiskey Whistler. Boss goes up to order our drinks while we find a table. It’s crowded here on a Saturday night, and maybe I should be looking for someone to get my mind off of the blue-eyed, tatted-up biker, but all I can do is wonder if maybe Boss is right. Maybe Greyson does like me… but he doesn’t want to.

CHAPTER 2

GUNNER

I look down at my phone. “What the fuck?”

“Problem?” Pres asks me.

I shake my head. “Yeah, I’m going to fuck Boss up when we get back.”

Pres laughs. “What did he do?”

I shake my head. I’m never one to say much, but I’m too pissed to keep quiet. “He had one job. Keep Alice’s birthday party at the clubhouse. That was it.”

Pres nods his head. “And…?”

I growl just thinking about Alice at the bar in town. “He sent me a text. ‘Change of plans, brother. We’re moving the party to The Whistler. Birthday girl’s request. I’ll watch her.’” I pocket my phone. “Mother fucker.”

Pres just stares at me blankly. “What does he mean, he’ll watch her? Am I missing something?”

I’m sure he’s confused because Lexi is Boss’ ol’ lady. I shift side to side and clear my throat. “You said we treat her like a princess, and that’s what we’re doing.”

He holds a hand up and shakes his head. “You mean Alice?”

When I nod, he asks, “So what? You all just follow her around?” He pauses for a minute. “Does this have anything to do with the dive bar you destroyed a few weeks ago?”

I grunt. “You heard about that?”

He laughs. “Yeah, I heard about that. I hear about everything. Is Alice okay with all this attention she’s getting?”

I shrug. She bitches about it daily, but I’m not telling Pres that. “I dunno. You’d have to ask her.”

I gesture to the open land in front of us, trying to change the subject. “So is this it?”

Pres nods his head and inhales. “This is it. What do you think?”

I scan the land. “Looks good. What are you thinking?”
