With his back pressed against the vehicle, he crept forward, until he could see the front bumper of the car. He leaned forward enough to confirm the ride sticker in the windshield’s upper corner. What the hell? Who was this woman? FBI? One of King’s crew?
The insider in the mayor’s office?
Pushing off the side panel, he rounded the rear and glared at her. Sue startled, and then frantically searched for something on the passenger seat.
He strode to her window, knocked on it. She whipped around with a stun gun in hand, and pointed at him. She yelled for him to back off.
“Get out of the car,” he ordered.
She stared, eyes wide, the stun gun still aimed at him.
“You realize it won’t do anything but hit the glass, right?”
She looked embarrassed as she rolled the window down, still pointing it at him.
With one quick movement, he disarmed her, making her cry out from the unexpected action. “Hey, that’s mine. Give it to me.”
He twirled it around in his hand, walked back to the sidewalk, and motioned with his finger for her to follow.
With a great show of exasperation, she got out, closing the door quickly when another vehicle drove by and then reluctantly joined him.
He held out the weapon and she took it. “Why are you following me?”
“I’m not at liberty to say.”
Mia burst from Malachi’s truck and came running back to them. “Sue? What are you doing here?”
“You okay?” she asked.
Mia looked confused. “Fine. What’s going on?”
“I didn’t trust this guy.” She waved a thumb in Malachi’s direction. “I wanted to make sure he is on the up and up.”
Mia studied Malachi, as if she were inspecting him for the first time. “I haven’t quite decided that myself.”
The two women ogled him, as if they could tell if he were a good guy or a bad one simply by his looks. He raised his hands palm up to Mia. “What are you talking about?”
Mia gave him a cute smile. “He’s okay, Sue. You don’t have to worry about me. He’s a good guy.”
Malachi shook his head.Women. He wasn’t sure he’d ever understand them.
Sue touched Mia’s arm. “I know who you are. I’ve known all along, but don’t hate me, please? Your sister hired me to watch out for you and befriend you after you…you know.”
“Amber hired you?” Her tone was incredulous. “But she didn’t even know my—”
Sue waved it off. “I want you to know, I really do think of you as a friend. That’s why I was worried after her kidnapping. I didn’t know what to do when he was at your place yesterday. I was trying to keep an eye on you, because I was worried. I want to help locate Amber.”
“We’ve got everybody searching for her. I don’t know what you can do, but I feel the same way about you. I’m glad we’re friends, although I’m a little pissed at her for doing this and not telling me.”
“She’s definitely a big sister,” Sue said with a chuckle. “She has the gene and wants to look out for you. She told me that she felt guilty for your kidnapping. She said, ‘I lost one sister already.’ and that she was going to spend the rest of her life trying to make it up to you.”
Malachi held out Horvat’s picture. “Have you ever seen this man?”
Sue studied it briefly. “I wish I had. I’d go shoot him myself. I saw you on the TV, flashing the photos, but up to that point? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him.”
Mia hugged Sue. “Go on home. I’ll contact you as soon as I know something, and I’ll check in with you tomorrow, even if I don’t. Deal?”
“I’m just a text or call away.”
