“My youngest sister, Candace. You’ll like her. She’s neurotic and hardworking, just like you. But I have to warn you, you’re going to get the third degree from all the women in my life.”
“Nowyou tell me.”
“Hey, Candy forced the truth out of me about you making me into your boy toy.”
Brooke laughed. “Well, at least there won’t be any secrets about us with your family.”
Man, she hated secrets. “There’s probably something else I should tell you.”
The laughter faded. “What?”
“Melinda was kind of… Um, my mom really…”
“Your mom thought Melinda was perfect and loved her like a daughter.”
How did she know? “Exactly.”
“And you’re afraid she won’t accept me because she still has feelings for Melinda.”
“You’re very perceptive for someone who grew up in such a dysfunctional family and claims to hate social gatherings.”
“It’s one of my many talents.”
Smartass. He drew her close, wrapping his arms around her. “Thank you for doing this.”
The heels gave her height but she still had to rise up slightly to kiss him. “I expect a two-carat engagement ring and a whole closet full of designer shoes by the end of the week.”
“Two carats, is that all?”
The grin returned. “It’s a start.”
He smacked her ass, kissed her to seal the deal, and went to load up the car.
