He peeked at her between his fingers. “Is there hope for me?”
She pushed off the bed and straightened. “Do you suck at anything?”
“Excuse me?”
“Even Conrad has flaws. Hero-type flaws, but flaws none the less.”
He played dumb. “Conradwho?”
“Never mind.” She shook her head. “Where are the towels? I’ll use the guest bath for my shower.”
Roman went to the hall closet and found the plushest set he owned. He handed them to her and guided her to his room. “You’re not using the guest bath.”
Against her protests, he dug out one of his T-shirts and a pair of cotton shorts for her, stacking them on top of the towels in her arms. “These will be big on you, but more comfortable than your clothes, unless of course, you sleep commando.”
He waggled his brows, hoping to keep things light. She rolled her eyes and headed for his en suite. “I’m calling David first thing in the morning and canceling my trip to Utah.”
David, her boss. The Smithsonian. “You are?”
She stopped in the doorway and flipped on the light. The illumination picked up the highlights in her hair. “I’m going to catch the guy who killed my friend and her parents all those years ago and you’re going to help me.”
Yes. His diligence and perseverance had paid off. He held out his hands, a rush of accomplishment filling his veins. “My taskforce is your taskforce, Dr. Heaton.”
“Good.” She nodded. “There’s just one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“I need a gun.”
Okay, then. He held up a finger. “Hold that thought.”
He went to the gun safe inside his closet, found a sweet little handgun that should fit her smaller hands and brought it out. “Glock 19, Gen 4, 9 mm pistol. Small enough to carry concealed, big enough to stop a man in his tracks. Has a dual system to reduce recoil. You know how to shoot?”
“No.” She eyed the gun with a mix of interest and disdain. “But you’re going to show me.”
Yes, sir. The woman had balls. “You’ve got a deal, doc.”
Her eyes locked with his. “Thank you. For everything.”
“I’m glad you’re here.” It wasn’t a lie.
Her gaze dipped, a slow scan of his body before it rose again to his face. “So am I.”
She disappeared into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her.
Smiling, Roman let his imagination go wild when he heard the shower come on.
