“He’ll tell you that.I’m going to write down a couple of things, including his phone number, but I don’t expect you to call the number, it’s just there for you to show you I’m not trying put you in touch with an imposter.”

“Here.”Ronnie set the pen and paper on the counter next to his plate.

Demon watched Gavin for a couple more seconds then picked up the pen and wrote quickly.

Wesley Moore.Tell him Demon sent you.Use this phrase:

‘The bond between chosen family is often a thousand times stronger than the bond of blood.’

When he was done, he picked up the paper and handed it to Gavin.

“Here.Reach out to him, then come back and talk to me.”Demon went back to his burrito.“This is really good.”

 “How do I reach you?”

“Your sister has my number, but I’m not going anywhere. You can call here. You can go in the other room, or outside.Hell, you can go stand on top of A-mountain.I don’t care but I’m not leaving Ronnie alone until I know she’s no longer in danger.”

Gavin watched him for several seconds.Demon assumed he was trying to make a decision. Was it safe to leave Ronnie here with Demon, even if he was just in the other room?Demon didn’t say anything or try to convince him.His words would make no difference anyway.

“Don’t leave the house,” Gavin said, turning away from the counter.“I’ll be out when I have answers.”

 “We’ll be here.”

 Dedication

 TheRidewithMebooks are for Daniel.

Twenty-seven years is a lifetime. It hasn’t always been easy.Sometimes it’s been harder than you can imagine. We’ve shared tears and laughter, blessings and loss. But it’s always been worth it.

I’m looking forward to twenty-seven more, and all that they bring us.

You’re the only one I want to Ride with Me.

RonniestaredatDemon. What the hell was that?Call work and ask for a specific person? What the hell was going on here?

“What’s going on?”she asked, still watching him.

“Let’s give him a few minutes to make that call. That way I only have to go over it once.”He stepped toward her and lowered his voice.“Do I scare you, firecracker?”

She blinked.Butterflies fluttered low in her belly.

 “No.”

“How long is your brother going to be in town?”His voice got softer, some how deeper.Something about it seemed to vibrate through her entire body, sending warmth curling through her to pool between her legs.

 “I don’t know.We haven’t talked about it.Why?”

He didn’t respond right away, but let his gaze rake down her body, then back up.

“Because I want to know how long I’m going to have to compete for your attention.”

 “What do you mean?”

“I mean, firecracker, that I want to know when I can kiss you again.I want to know when I can touch you.I want to know that when I start something, it won’t be interrupted.”He moved closer with each sentence, until she sat on her barstool, her head tilted back to look up at him as he stood close enough that if they both took deep breaths, they would touch.

“Kiss me again?”The words came out as barely more than a whisper. Why had she let them out?She hadn’t meant to.The hungry look in his eyes did something to her, something she didn’t understand. But it felt so good she wanted more.
