Eli James seems like a phenomenal guy, and damn if that doesn’t make it worse. Especially since I’m half-hoping he falls off a horse and is too badly injured to act out any sex scenes.

Knowing he’s about to get all up in Elena’s personal space soon is grating on my nerves.

It shouldn’t. I’ve never given a single thought to what or who any woman I hooked up with did after me. Not once.

Even as a teenager when all the other guys were jealous and possessive as fuck.

I didn’t have a steady girlfriend in high school like Wyatt did. I had football and the ranch. And if after a game or before practice a cute cheerleader or two wanted to suck me off or ride my dick in the barn or locker room, well, who was I to refuse a girl a good time? But they were never a priority. So, I snuck an occasional cupcake here or there when I had time to indulge.

But it was just that. Sweet and fun but empty calories. Nothing that stuck to my ribs and made me want seconds.

Whatever kind of voodoo curse this woman put on me and my dick, I’m hoping it wears off before she films any “intense sexual scenes” with another dude in my vicinity. Because honestly? Hearing the director say that shit was like taking a knee to the nuts.

I imagine seeing it happen would be worse. A spiky heel to the nuts.

Hard pass on that.

More alarming is that when she leans in close enough that I catch a whiff of her warm inviting scent, my dick goes rock hard. That would be super convenient if I had her naked and spread open back at my place. Not a great time in Wranglers in front of a live audience.

As we make our way to the stables, I pull out my phone and shoot Willow a quick text. It’s a dick move, but I’m desperate.

ME: How hard you planning to work this action hero in the mornings?

If she asks, I can play it off like I was trying to plan ahead for his afternoon training.

Three dots remain until I grow impatient.

Finally, she responds.

WILLOW: I have six weeks to make someone scared of horses look like a life-long rancher. How hard do you think?

I smile at the screen.

WILLOW: Why? You want me to take it easy on him or something?

I text back quickly because Elena’s strides are catching up to mine.

ME: Not at all. Matter of fact, if he can’t walk by dinnertime every night, that would be fine.

I put my phone away just as Elena reaches me. Her voice comes low from beside me, even though the rest of the group is far enough back that they’re out of earshot.

“I know what you’re doing,” she bites out.

I give her my most innocent face. “Walking?”

Her dark eyes narrow. “Do not play games with me, Isaac Logan.”

Even pissed, the way her sexy voice says my name has my blood flowing south.

“And here I thought you’d enjoyed the games we played.”

Her eyes grow even darker. “I was going to say thank you for bringing me dinner last night but then you keep being all…”

She’s at a loss for words. I enjoy it more than I should.

“Charming? Handsome? Dare I say, thoughtful?”

“I was debating between arrogant and obnoxious.”
