Turning away, he sat on the bed, on which he’d changed the sheets and cleaned up as best he could. At least dust didn’t puff around him as he moved like it had before. He grabbed his phone and tried to lose himself in some plotting, but every time he tried to think about his book, his mind went back across the street to where, he had to assume, his very drunk former best friend was probably getting laid.

It wasn’t this thought that had him acting, he told himself firmly. It was just seeing Eric again. He had spent years fighting himself on this. He would go on Facebook, and he would type in Eric Parker, and he would look at the smiling picture of his best friend. His finger would hover over theadd friendbutton, but he would never do it.

He’d thought he was over such foolishness. It had been over a year since he’d last been indulgent enough to allow himself to do it. Once more, though, he found himself tapping in the name, and this time, with his eyes closed, he pressed down on that button, which would send a friend request to Eric.

Theo had a private Facebook, one which the world at large didn’t know about, one different from his celebrity profile—and how weird to think that he was a big enough deal to be considered a celebrity—and that was the account he used. His own account.

Now he just had to hope that Eric didn’t just delete the request. Or maybe, he thought, as he drifted off to sleep, it would be better if he did.

Sometime in the night, Jupiter jumped up onto the bed beside him. Curling up into a furry little bundle of orange and white fluff, Jupiter settled down in the crook of Theo’s knees as he slept on his side.

The cat’s presence was comforting, but when the dreams started, when Theo started to remember, all over again, what it felt like to run away from the one person who had always been there for Theo, even the kitten couldn’t comfort him.
