A sigh falls from him, the same sound as I heard upstairs. “I always assumed you’d ask if you needed me. I was wrong in that, wasn’t I?”
My eyes lift to his, getting lost in translucent orbs again. “I’ve never asked anything of you, Samuel. I take what I can get.”
“Lord, help me. Your damned indifference astounds me sometimes.”
I frown at his testy tone, wondering where the fuck it came from given his smile a minute ago. “When will you learn? Love isn’t a token gesture, Logan. You don’t just get to take it or leave it, not when you feel it inside.”
Interesting argument given who we both are. I raise a brow and nod at the robes, the very thing that keeps us apart more than we're together. He has less right to talk of love than I have given that he hasn't a chance of honouring it.
"Don't you dare give me that crap," he snaps. "It suits you that I'm unattainable. Similar situation with a cop, don't you think? That's why you're interested in her. She's something you can't get attached to. No need to admit you might actually deserve happiness then, is there?"
I watch him sink the rest of his wine and grab at my pack of smokes, irritation all over his features for some reason. Never had him down as the jealous type.
“You're always going to be alone with that attitude. You can't help pushing people away, can you?"
I rise from my seat, grabbing my jacket to leave. I'm done with this. Whatever it is. I'm not explaining myself to anyone, least of all someone who wants to keep me hidden from his life.
"Why in God's name would you want to be alone for the rest of your life, Logan?”
Because alone is safe.
And I won't get hurt again.
