“Could of told me Yates was still here,” Kady whispered to Jimmy.

“I thought he left,” Jimmy whispered back.

Kady tossed Jimmy her car keys. “Food’s in the front seat.”

“Thanks.”

Kady followed her boss into his office. “Working late?” she asked cheerfully.

“Obviously.”

Kady sat in front of his desk and folded her hands in her lap. If she appeared calm, then maybe he’d relax. “Jimmy and I are making strides. Just received word about a potential source close to the Callaghan campaign. I’m going to meet with him tomorrow.”

He raised his brows, the redness in his face fading. “Good. Hope it pans out.”

Kady thought so. A source meant direct, first-hand information. As a journalist, she wouldn’t have to reveal who he was. Confidentiality.

“Now,” her boss continued, “where are you on this Wes character.”

Her heart hitched. She had hoped the mention of a source would distract him from Wes. “Um, Wes? Well, I was thinking the source—”

“You were supposed to see what you could get from Wes since he works for Callaghan and you already had an in with him.”

“Right, yes. Well, now that I have a source—”

“One you haven’t met yet.”

“But when Imeethim and verify his information, Wes won’t have to be used.”

“So, you’ve gotten nothing from Wes? That’s what you’re telling me?” His lips curved into a wicked grin and then chuckled.

Kady shifted in her seat and tried her best to ignore the perspiration forming on her brow. Her entire chest felt like something heavy was pressing on it. The source was a godsend. She didn’t want to use Wes if she could help it, and a source was his salvation. Because…using Wes waswrong.

And she was tired of the lies.

How many lies of omission did she perpetuate tonight?

She cleared her throat. “Nothing concrete.”

“You’ve fallen for him, haven’t you?” he asked bluntly.

“Sir—”

“Feelings cloud judgment. You were supposed to remain professional.”

Kady bristled. She was always professional. What she wanted was to maintain some semblance of integrity. Especially because shehadfallen for Wes. She sat up straighter, not willing to allow herself to be forced into a corner. “My personal relationships are none of your business, sir. With all due respect.”

“They are when they affect your work.”

“Which they haven’t.”

“You haven’t answered my question.”

Kady stood. “I’ll let you know after I meet with the source.” She stomped toward the door.

“I haven’t dismissed you!”

Without a backwards glance, she said, “I’m dismissing myself.” She slammed the door behind her and sprinted to the stairwell half-afraid he was going to shout at her for all the floor to hear.
