“The pit? As in a back fucking hallway at school? Are you insane?”

I kept walking toward the student parking lot. Drew jogged to catch up.

“Do you have any idea what would happen if you got caught?” His strides were longer than mine so he cut me off before I got to the car. “They’d arrest him. On the spot, no questions asked. And unless you marry him before the trial, you’d have to testify against him. This is sexual misconduct on school property we’re talking about. It will make the news.”

“Don’t you think I’ve thought about this? Don’t you think I’ve mentioned this to him?” I looked up at the sky hoping an answer would fall from it like rain. “We’ll stopped messing around in there. I’ll tell him we can only meet there to talk.”

“Yeah right. And you think he won’t touch you? Kiss you?”

I looked away and he knew the answer without my confession.

Drew shifted his weight where he stood. “Well…what does he say about it? Is he looking forward to prison attire or what?”

“He says I’m worth it, worth the risk. So to answer your question, yes, he’s insane.”

Drew’s eyes softened. “He’s super hot and kind of dumb. Like your very own Jordan Catalano.”

“Jordan who?”

He huffs out a sigh. “How are we even friends?” I move to get into my car and and he pulls me into a hug. “Calm down, Angela Chase. I’m just kidding.”

I have no clue who these people he’s referencing are or why, but I do need the hug.

“Are you working tonight?”

I shake my head. “I have to take Ethan to practice from five to seven. Camille’s covering my shift tonight. She said she owed me.”

“She does. After Ethan’s practice over, come by the house. I have to show you something.”

“Do I even want to know?”

He chuckles lightly over my head. “Yes. It’s life-changing. I’ll order pizza from Tony’s.”

“With pineapple?” I glance up hopefully.

He tilts his head downward. If we were a real couple, it’d be romantic. “Yes, precious. With your weird pineapple. On your half.”

That night, after I’d taken Ethan to and from baseball practice, checked that his homework was done, and made sure my mom ate some semblance of dinner, I arrived at Drew’s.

The smell of tomatoes and garlic meant the pizza had arrived before me. Drew’s mom was curled up in a blanket on the couch watching a rerun of Blue Bloods.

She greeted me then told me to help myself to pizza in the kitchen and that Drew was upstairs waiting for me.

I grabbed two slices of the ham, pineapple, and jalapeño I knew were for me and headed up to their bonus room.

“Drewskie,” I called out once I was up the stairs. “You up here?”

Opening the door, I stepped into the darkened den precariously balancing my paper plate of pizza and a soda in one hand.

Drew was on the couch with the television already on.

The screen was black with white typewriter style letters that readMy So-Called Life.

I frowned. “What is this?”
