She’s a middle-aged woman with dark hair and warm brown eyes.

“The surgery was a bit more complicated than we’d normally expect. Fallon went into premature labor; we had no choice but to opt for a cesarean section. We ran into some trouble getting the baby out, but you don’t have to worry anymore. Both mother and child are fine.”

I’ve never been more relieved in my entire life.

“They’re okay?” I ask breathlessly.

The doctor looks at me. “They’re fine. Congratulations, dad. You have a healthy baby girl.”

I’m hit with overwhelming happiness. I have a baby girl. Then I think about the consequences of that and realize.

I’m so fucked.

“Dude, you’re fucked,” Damien says with a chuckle voicing my thoughts.

I roll my eyes before hurriedly thanking the doctor for her efforts.

“Can we see them now?” Mellissa questions.

“Of course. The patient will be awake in less than 10 minutes. I’ll direct a nurse to take you to them.”

Her parents and brother let me in to see her first. Fallon’s awake and holding our baby in her arms when I walk in. She looks up at me, and I see unshed tears in her eyes.

“Alex, she looks like both of us,” she says softly.

I move closer and get my first look at my baby girl.

“She’s perfect,” I breathe.

“What should we call her?” Fallon asks.

We already came up with a bunch of names for both a girl and a boy. We didn’t want to know the sex of the baby in advance because we wanted to be surprised.

“Sofia,” I reply softly.

“Sofia Anna King,” Fallon states.

My eyes meet hers. Anna was my mom’s name.

“I figured we should honor her grandparents in some way.”

I’m completely speechless as I stare at her.

“That’s amazing, Fallon. Thank you,” I whisper, kissing her cheek. “I don’t know what I would have done if anything happened to either of you.”

“We’re here,” she assures me. “And we’re safe. I’m not going anywhere, Alex.

“I love you so much,” I tell her.

I spent so long running away from love when I should have embraced it. Tears well up in Fallon’s eyes.

“I love you too, Alex.”

“I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you. Consider this my unofficial proposal. We’re getting married, baby,” I announce.

She laughs. “Sounds like the best plan.”

Unable to stop myself, I kiss her lips softly before collecting my daughter and holding her in my arms. She’s so tiny and fragile. I’m going to do everything in my power to protect her. Forever.
