Alice applauded, along with the servants. She felt so proud of Phillip. He might be a duke, but he was a man of principles, showing a willingness to work side by side with his people. Much the same, as Mr Eli had told her, that he had been at the plantation. Her husband was a wonderful man, and he was her man.

She stayed by his side for the rest of the day, getting to know his relatives better. His father had younger brothers and sisters who had children of their own. There were fewer siblings from his mother’s side, but they were equally as welcoming towards her.

And then there were his niece and nephew, who were having the happiest of times playing among all the other children at the celebration.

She watched the garden party guests from the stone terrace, and soon she felt a strong arm slip around her waist.

“We did it, my love,” her husband whispered in her ear. “Our family begins here, and we have many years to care for the land. But know this: I will take you to my true home one day. A place where I found much happiness. Though I must add that we will be older by then.”

“And will you still love me when my hair is grey?” she questioned, teasing him.

“Always and forever, I will love you.”
