I tossed the trash into the bin then found his arms wrapped around me, his lips on mine. His kiss took my breath away, and I melted in his arms. “I have missed you.”

“Me too, baby.” He couldn’t seem to let me go. “We have to make time for each other. I know you’ve got to take those tests. But when will you be done with them?”

“My last test is on Friday. And as soon as I’m finished with that, I have to get back to work. The day manager is working for me. She’ll stay until I can come in.”

“Are you working here on Saturday morning?”

“I am.” I knew this time problem was a huge one. “I told you this wasn’t going to be easy.”

“Nothing easy is ever worth much.” He swayed with me in his arms without letting go. “Sunday?”

“Well, since I’ll be making the schedule on Friday night, I’ll be sure to give myself Sunday night off. And with all my tests behind me, the next classes won’t be starting for another week.”

Excitement peppered his deep voice. “You’re going to be free for a week?”

“Not entirely, no. But I’ll have more free time than I normally would. I’ll have two free nights when I take them off from Hamburger Hut.” I held my breath, waiting to see what he would say to that.

“You’re spending both those nights with me. As soon as you know what nights you’re off, you let me know so I make sure to free myself up too. When you get off work here, you can go straight over to my place. I’ll text you the codes to the gate and the front door.”

“Wow, that’s like giving me a key to your place. You sure you’re ready to give up that much of yourself?” We hadn’t spoken about being exclusive. I mean, he knew he was my exclusive since I could barely find time for him, much less for anyone else. “What if I show up one night, late and unannounced just so I can cuddle with you for a few hours, only to find another woman in your bed?”

Shaking his head, he said, “That won’t happen.”

“You sure?” I knew I wasn’t giving him the amount of sex he was used to. “A man has needs, but I’m not doing much to satisfy them.”

“Don’t worry about that.” He kissed me softly. “I’m more than satisfied.”

I wasn’t going to lie. I wanted more of what he gave out so well. “I’ve gotta get back to work. Otherwise, I’d love to just stand here, letting you hold me in your strong arms.” I put my hands on his muscular biceps, recalling how they flexed as he moved over me. Warmth spread through me, pulses in my lower regions signaling that arousal had already begun. And I didn’t have time for that.

Leaning in, his breath flowed warmly over my ear, “How about a quicky in an empty patient room?”

“If I could, I would. Somehow, I don’t think either of us would stop at a quicky.”

“Yeah, you’re right about that. I can hold out for those two nights you’re spending with me.” He grinned as his eyes lit up. “In my head, I’m already planning out the dinners for both nights.”

“Nothing fancy,” I said as I laughed, knowing full well the man knew no other way of making a meal — at least when he was making one for me.

“Never.” With a sigh, he kissed my cheek then let me out of his arms. “Get back to work before I toss you over my shoulders and steal you away from this place, kicking and screaming.”

“As if you would do such a thing.” I reluctantly moved a few steps back, making space between us where before there’d been none. “I’ll text you later.”

“Looking forward to it.” He stood there as I walked away.

I was halfway to the operating room, as one of the doctors was about to do an appendectomy, when I realized that I hadn’t asked Stone why he was at the hospital. I knew he had his sister-in-law and niece bringing the food samples in. Other than that, he didn't have any business at the hospital.

One of the other interns, Miss Callahan, came up beside me. “You don’t happen to have anything for cramps, do you?”

“Like Midol?”

“Yeah. Anything will do. I’ve got terrible cramps. My time of the month came early, or I would’ve had some on me.”

I’d kept a small packet of two pills in my pocket as my time of the month was supposed to have come a few days ago. “You can have these. I don’t feel any signs of mine showing up today.” I found it funny how most of the women who worked closely together had their times of the month on a very similar schedule.

“Great. Everyone I’ve asked has taken theirs already. We’re all on the same pattern here, it seems. I’m lucky yours is running late.” She took the pills out of the packet and swallowed them, chasing them down with a drink from the bottle of water she carried. “I’ll bring some tomorrow so you can keep your stash on you. When the time hits, it’s awful.”

“Maybe you’re early and I’m late because of that new nurse who started working here last month. We’re probably all going through some syncing process. How I hate mother nature sometimes.”

“Me too.” We headed into the scrub room, finding that quite a few others had gotten there before us.
