Chapter Seventeen

Warner

Three more nights—that’s all I’ve got left with her.

With so little time left, I wasn’t going to waste a single second. “I’ve taken the next four days off.” I took one extra because I was sure that I wouldn’t feel like working after I had to say goodbye.

She came out of the bathroom of my bedroom, wearing one of my t-shirts and looking cute as hell. “And what are our plans for today?” She reached for her bag, which she’d brought with her after I had asked her to spend the night with me on our barbeque date. She’d happily agreed. “I need to know what I should wear today.”

“We’re going to spend the night in a cabin by the river near the small town of Concan. It’s a couple of hours from here, in the country.” It was on the cool side, being January. “A light sweater and jeans would be good, I think.” We’ll take our time getting there, too. We’ll find a place to have lunch and even dinner before getting there.”

Taking her bag with her, she retreated back into the bathroom to get ready for our day. I loved the way she never argued about where we were going or huffed and said she didn’t feel like doing what I planned for us.

I had no idea if that was because she was on vacation and didn’t know what was possible or what the deal was—I simply loved it.

Our night had been another insanely sexual and unimaginably pleasurable one. The one thing I was sure of was that both of us were hitting it out of the ballpark in bed, and that was a thing no one could do forever.

The brevity of our romance enhanced everything. From the way food tasted to the way making love to each other felt, it was all enhanced by the knowledge that each day was a gift. We knew the gift would soon be gone.

Until that time came, we were both up for anything. Neither of us had ever experienced anything like this. And it made for another intimate connection, knowing that this was a first for each of us.

Gathering my clothes, I walked across the hallway to another bedroom with a bath attached so I could get cleaned up and ready to leave.

We’d found out earlier that morning when we’d tried to shower together that it wasn’t an option for us. If we were together and naked, we were going to have sex—end of story.

When I made it back to my bedroom, I found her dressed and ready. “I’m good to go whenever you are.”

I had to pack a bag for myself and took a piece of luggage from the closet. “Let me pack really quickly, then we’re out of here, honey.”

“Is there anything you want me to do while you’re at it?” she asked.

“No, ma’am. I already loaded up the ice chest last night, and that’s the only other thing we’ll need for this trip—other than our packed bags.”

It didn’t take me long to pack, and then we were on our way to the hill country. The scenery along the way was some of the prettiest in the whole state of Texas. Orla looked out the window in awe. “I bet this is really gorgeous in the spring when everything is green.”

“It is.” We pulled up to the small cabin I’d rented online. “And here we are. Our little slice of paradise for the night.”

She hurried out of the truck and ran around, looking at everything. “Hey, there’s a hot tub on the porch back here!”

I entered the code into the lock system and gained access to the cabin. “Well, come on inside, and we’ll check everything out.”

She walked in through the front door, looking at the rustic furnishings and décor. “Is this how people used to live in the old days?”

“I think so. I mean, I think that’s the look they’re going for, so I’m sure it’s kind of accurate. In the real old days, there was no air conditioning, and probably no running water or toilet.” I was glad those days were long gone. I opened the back door and saw the hot tub on the back porch. “And no hot tubs either, I’m sure.”

She sat on the bed at the back of the one-room cabin. Running her hand over the quilt, she said, “I like this very much, Warner. I feel like I’m getting to know your country even better.”

It was hard not to want her as she sat on that bed. I sat down beside her, pointing up. “That skylight up there certainly wasn’t part of the old world.” But it would make our night so much better.

We both fell back on the bed, looking up at the sky that would soon be dark and full of stars. Our hands moved toward each other’s until they touched. Holding hands while lying there, we looked at the sky until the sun faded away, turning the day into night.

We watched in silence until Orla whispered, “I could spend eternity doing just this.”

I could spend eternity with only you.

My life would be so easy with Orla in it, I was sure of it.

“This must be what utopia is like.” I rolled over to look at her. “I think you and I have found bliss.”
