Tim sat back, obviously impressed. “You’re kick ass.”

“Ha! Not really.” Emmy had flushed red at the compliment. She glanced at her watch. “But what Iamis late. I have to be at work by three.”

“I’ll drop you off at home.”

As they drove back to Georgetown, Tim looked over at her. “Hey, tomorrow is Friday night—you working?”

“Unfortunately, so,” Emmy sighed, but she didn’t mean it. Working meant seeing Orin and… “How about Saturday night? Are you free? We could go see a movie or something?”

“Sounds good to me.” He grinned at her with that smile that was so much like Zach’s it made her heart thud with sadness. For a moment, she wondered whether they should invite Marge as a chaperone, but then she brushed the idea away. Tim knew they were just friends; her paranoia wasn’t going to ruin that.

As she arrived at work, Duke was waiting for her. “Martin Karlsson will be here in an hour, and Lucas wants to see you.”

Why did those words now strike fear into her heart? It was one kiss and no one saw it. Just chill out, woman.

She went to find Lucas. “Hey, Em, come on in.”

Lucas seemed in a good mood. “We may have a lead on the bombers,” he said, handing her a folder. “A local farmer noticed activity on his land near a barn he hadn’t used for a few years. Nothing major, just that a light was switched on outside of it. He wouldn’t have noticed, but he got up in the middle of the night to pee and saw it in the distance. Went out there in the morning and saw the doors had been jimmied. Inside: fertilizer.”

“Which isn’t unusual on a farm.”

“No.” Lucas smiled at her. “Until you factor in that the farmer didn’t know where the hell it came from. He questioned his workers—as did we—but they’re denying all knowledge of it.”

“I don’t understand. C4 was used at the high school, not fertilizer.”

“I know. But we have to follow up and that farm is less a mile away from Camp David.”

Emmy nodded. “Okay.” She studied her mentor. “Not to rain on your parade, boss, but it doesn’t seem like much of a lead.”

Lucas sat down. “I know, but at this point, I’ll take anything. If we can find out where the fertilizer came from and who bought it, we might have a chance. Max Neal’s people have gone so deep underground, they’re just ghosts. It doesn’t make me sleep better at night. You have Martin Karlsson coming in?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Well, any light he can shed is worth it. Get him on our side, Emmy.”

“Yes, sir.”

Emmy was surprised when she went to pick up Martin Karlsson from reception that he seemed to remember her. “Agent Sati, good to see you again.”

“You, too, Mr. Karlsson. Would you come with me, please?”

“Of course.”

They walked in silence through the field office, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Emmy offered him some coffee. “No thank you, but I’ll take some ice water if you have some.”

“Of course. Have a seat in here and I’ll be right back.”

“Thank you.”

Emmy grabbed some ice water from the fridge and went to find Duke. “Karlsson’s waiting.”

Martin Karlsson actually smiled at them as they came in, even at Duke. “Ah, Agent Harte, hello again.”

“Thanks for coming in to speak with us, Mr. Karlsson.”

“It’s Martin, and it’s my pleasure. I know why you want to talk to me.”

“Max Neal.”
