Margo got up and came across the room to grab me up and hug me tight. “Oh, Aspen, you’re the greatest friend ever!”
I found myself crying along with her, and before I knew it, we were in a group hug, each one of us crying. And then came a knock at the door.
Trying to buck up, I pulled myself out of the tangled group. “That’s probably Ransom.”
Margo grabbed my arm. “Don’t go, Aspen. Just stay here with us.”
As silly as it might be, I almost wanted to do just that. But I’d already spent twenty thousand dollars of the man’s money. And I had to admit that I was growing more and more excited about our baby. “I can’t, Margo. But I will be back to visit. Just like I said I would.”
Wiping my eyes, I went to answer the door. Ransom stood there with his back to the door. “Hi,” I whispered.
I almost hated the way he made my heart jump and my body heat up. I hoped that I would get used to seeing him, used to being around him, and that would stop happening to me.
He turned back to look at me. His blue eyes twinkled with amusement. “Were you crying again?”
I nodded.
He didn’t seem to understand at all. “Why?”
Margo burst out, “Because she’s leaving us.” And then she ran off to the bedroom.
Cher and Anna followed suit, and I stood there in the doorway. “Um, looks like they’re all pretty sad.” I looked over my shoulder at the three suitcases that held all my belongings. “Wanna help me get my bags?”
“Sure.” He came in and we walked toward the stack of luggage on the floor.
I bent over to pick a bag up, but he brushed me to one side. “Ransom?”
“I’ve got these.” He picked them all up as if they didn’t weigh a thing. “Is this all?”
I nodded as I picked up my purse off the bar. “Yes. That’s all I have.”
With a jerk of his head in gesture to the open door, he said, “Then let’s jet.”
I made one last look around the little apartment before walking out that door. I might visit. I might pay to keep my space in the little apartment. But I doubted I would ever call this place home again.
It made my heart ache a bit.
But then I recalled how much my heart had hurt when I had to leave the home I’d grown up in. It had been hard, but I did it. And I could make this change too.
As I wiped away more tears, I closed the door then turned to find Ransom standing in front of a very pretty pearl-colored SUV. He’d put the luggage down and leaned his ass against the hood. “You like?”
“It’s nice. Is it a Lincoln?” I asked as I walked up to it, looking it over.
“It is. A brand new MKX. It’s got three rows of seating. This baby can seat seven comfortably. And there’s still space in the back for storage. It’s got a windshield that can sense moisture and the wipers will come on automatically to clear it.” He grabbed the luggage and went to the back of the car.
I followed along behind him. “The cream-colored leather is gorgeous.”
“You like that, do ya?” He put the baggage inside, and there was still space for more things. “Roomy, huh?”
“It is roomy. And it looks so comfy. Did you just buy it?” I ran my hand over the back of the seat in front of the storage area, finding it smooth to the touch.
“Yep. I just drove it out of the showroom and came right here.” He moved around the car before opening the passenger side door to the backseat. “Plenty of room in the backseats. See?”
He moved back, and I looked inside. “Very roomy. And so perfect too. I love it.”
“I’m glad to hear that.” He closed the backseat door and then opened the driver’s door. Holding out a keyless fob, he wore a giant grin. “Because it’s yours.”
I thought I had misheard him. “It’s yours.”
