Chapter One

Raina

I take special care in getting ready today for my date with Colton. We have been dating for three years, and I know he’s going to propose tonight.

Why else would he get us reservations at one of the most prestigious restaurants in our city? This is the place where people get engaged with all of the romantic décors inside.

I’m slipping into my heels when I hear a slight knock on the door. The same light knocking that Colton always uses when he is coming to pick me up.

With one last look at the mirror to make sure my blonde hair is still semi-curled in the beach waves I rolled in and my lightly glossed lips are still glossed, I make my way to the door. I don’t want to seem too eager but I’m so excited for him to propose.

Colton and I met our junior year of college and have been together ever since. I’m sure we could have moved in together after graduation, but Colton was always keen on having his own space. I pretend I understood why from the beginning, but I didn’t.

I throw open the door to see a dozen white roses in a beautiful display in front of me. I love when he brings me white roses!

“Thank you,” I gush sticking my nose in the tea-length roses.

Colton’s handsome face breaks into a grin as he leans in to kiss me on my cheek. “I saw them and immediately thought of you.”

He’s too sweet sometimes.

I make sure to wiggle the fingers of my left hand to get him to hold my hand. His fingers entwine with mine instantly.

Colton looks like the all-American type of guy with his dark features- brown hair and eyes, he’s tall and has perfectly straight teeth. Nice puffy lips that are totally kissable.

He leads me out to his car, opening up the door for me to slide in. Colton casually closes the door and then slides into the driver’s seat.

We don’t talk very much in the car because he is always listening to the talk radio. I’m not a fan of talk radio, but I get over it.

Colton is incredibly smart graduating at the top of his class, captain of several sporting teams at college, and graduated with several job offerings at many of the local architecture companies. He is the perfect guy to bring home to my parents.

He rushes over to my side of the car as soon as he is parked in the valet line to open the car door for me. He is forever the gentleman.

“Here you go,” he calls out throwing his keys to the valet worker. “Ready?”

I smile. My heart is beating so fast out of nerves. I can’t believe tonight is the night I’m going to get engaged!

“Mr. Mueller, welcome,” the hostess with the low-cut dress in front of us calls out.

I’m already seeing how she is looking up at Colton and my fingers squeeze around his elbow in a slight warning. I know how attractive he is but it doesn’t make me less jealous.

Carefully, we are led to our table by the fireplace. I’m gushing inside as I try to push out the flirty eyes of the hostess. She can look at him all she wants! I’m leaving here engaged to him.

I’m seated across from Colton casually with my heart pounding in my chest. I can’t believe it!

“I hope you don’t mind, Raina, I took the liberty of ordering our food ahead of time.”

My lips curve in a frown. I’m a picky eater and sometimes people forget how picky I can be. I decide to let it go and focus on this.

“That sounds lovely,” I reply.

Just over to the left of the dining room, I can see the small snow flurry falling while catching the lights from inside. They sparkle as they float down.

“It’s beautiful here,” I murmur more to myself than to anyone else.

Our waitress, another flirty woman with a low-cut dress, comes out from the kitchen with a bottle of wine. She pours each of us a glass while we do the obligatory sniffing of the wine. Colton nods his appreciation sending her back off to her other tasks.

“What’s the occasion?” I blurt out. I’m dying to know what he has planned.
