“I can step out and give y’all some privacy,” he offered. He was here now, so it wasn’t any need for him to leave.

“No, you can stay. Destiny and her friends jumped me and Staci outside the mall. She kept saying, I always want what she has, and Dantè was hers first. She said if she couldn’t have her baby, then neither could I. I almost lost my baby,” I revealed right when Dantè entered the room. He looked from me to Jersey and then my sister. He was clearly uncomfortable, but I didn’t care at this moment.

“How did you know I was here?” I asked, focusing my attention on him.

“Staci hit me up. Why didn’t you call me?” he asked. He had a look of genuine concern on his face that couldn’t be missed.

“For what? It’s your fault in the first place that bitch jumped me and tried to kill my baby!” I cried.

“That’s my baby, too!” he countered.

“Aye, come with me.” Jersey tapped Dantè on his chest. He looked over at me before turning to follow Jersey out the room.

“Trin, I’m so sorry.” Mylani came and sat beside me on the bed and pulled me into her arms. I broke down crying like a baby.

“I’ve never done anything to that girl, and she hates me for nothing. I finally have something of my own to love me, and she tried to take that from me.” I was sobbing at this point, but I didn’t care.

“Hey, you know I love you. Fuck Destiny. I’m gonna talk to Tammy myself, because clearly, she doesn’t have any control over her daughter. Listen, I know you’re upset right now, but don’t be so hard on Dantè. That’s his child, too, and so far, he hasn’t given you any reason to think that he was up to anything grimy, has he?”

“No,” I mumbled.

“Well, don’t take your frustrations out on him. Save it for the bitch that deserves it.” She was right. I didn’t need to be so hard on Dantè, at least not before hearing him out.

“You’re right. I’m going to apologize when he comes back in.” As if he had been eavesdropping, he reappeared in the room, along with Jersey.

“Aye, I told the nurse that you were ready for the discharge papers. Lani is gonna sign you out, but this nigga gonna take you home,” Jersey directed.

“Bae, I think we should take her home,” Mylani advised.

“Nah, she’s in good hands. They need to talk this shit out. This is what happens when you do adult shit. Ain’t no running. They gonna talk this shit out like adults. Ain’t that right, Dantè?”

“Yeah,” he said, staring a hole through me.

“Well, you make sure that you call me when you get there. I don’t want to get any more calls like this tonight.”

“You won’t.”

We all waited for about thirty more minutes before the doctor came and finally released me. After assuring Mylani for the umpteenth time that I would call her when I made it home, we were piling inside our respective cars and leaving the hospital.

I didn’t even give him a chance to ask me any questions before I started firing off my own.

“You mess with Destiny?”

“I used to. That was about a year ago, though. It wasn’t on no official shit though. I would fall through and smash her ass in my car and then dip. She told me she was pregnant, and I told her to get rid of it. I didn’t want to be tied down to her ass, so I made the decision for the both of us. I know it sounds fucked up, but that’s what it was.”

“Did you know that was my sister when we first started messing around?”

“Nah. She made that shit known after seeing us together. I haven’t messed with that girl or any other girl since I made shit official with you.” I looked up at him and saw the sincerity on his face. I believed him, so I wasn’t gonna give him a hard time. That bitch Destiny was gonna see me, and I was gonna beat her ass for me and my baby.

“I believe you. I’m sorry for snapping at you at the hospital,” I apologized.

“It’s cool. The big homie took me outside and gave me a lil’ pep talk. I knew you were upset.” He reached over and placed my hand in his, and we rode the rest of the ride to my house engulfed in our own thoughts.

Shit been cool with me and Asia. We hadn’t made it official yet, but what’s understood didn’t have to be explained. She started staying at my spot a few nights a week. I thought when she found out my brother told Mylani she didn’t have to work anymore, she would be on my head about not working. Surprisingly, she hadn’t. Like my brother, I didn’t mind my girl dancing. I was there on most nights, anyway. A muthafucka knew not to try me. Jesus was a better option. I couldn’t wait to get to the crib to lay up and rub on her booty. It was that time of the month, so she wasn’t working. I was at the truck yard, handling my shit here first. No matter how bad I wanted to lay up, business always trumped everything.
