“Which is to your favor if Rowena does want to be co-CEO with you.”
I nod. “Enough about me. What’s happening with your job? Any chance of promotion?” Sebastian worked at a law firm for three years and then moved in-house at Capital Management, where he’s been for the past two years. He still doesn’t seem satisfied.
“I’m exploring an offer from an entertainment company.”
“That would be different.”
“The work at Capital Management is great, and I especially like my boss, Brooke. You’ve met my friends there. But again, I don’t see great promotional opportunities. Brooke is young, and she’s not leaving anytime soon. She’s a great boss, and she completely looks out for me, so I think I’ll be promoted this next round. But this company is offering me an Associate General Counsel position. The General Counsel is older and said he might be looking to retire soon. He wanted the start-up experience first.”
“Are you sure he’s not telling you that to entice you?”
“He could be. I have to do more due diligence and find some associates who worked for him at his last firm.”
“And then you could date Brooke.”
Sebastian snorts. He pushes the little, red door open. I bend my body and follow him out. The squash court is located on the upper floor of our apartment building.
“I have no desire to date Brooke. She’s my boss. She’s like …” He shudders. “Believe me. Stop trying to set me up. I’m very happily single.”
I slip out of my squash shoes and back into my sneakers. Sebastian puts on his slippers. We walk over to the elevator, and I push the button.
“Classy,” I say. “Where’s your robe?”
“Don’t tell me you’re going to take the elevator with the rest of us plebians when you’re one flight up.”
The elevator door opens.
“I was just seeing you off like the gentleman I am,” I say.
Sebastian puts both hands on my shoulder and looks at me. “Forget this woman. And concentrate on becoming co-CEO. This is the opportunity of your lifetime. No pressure.” He smiles and slips into the elevator. The elevator doors close in my face.
He’s right.Forget about Lily. Focus on the end game: co-CEO with Rowena. Do what I need to do. Don’t try to save the garden.

Rupert
Istepintotheelevator at GreenGrocer, holding my plastic basket with groceries, and press the button for the second floor with organics.
Just as the doors start to close, a cart noses in. The doors retract, and in comes Lily, bringing with her the smell of fresh air.
I blink. It’s like my thoughts conjured Lily up. But it’s definitely her.
“Hello,” I say.
She glances up, sees me, and I seriously think she checks if she can back out, but the doors have shut.
“Hi,” she says. She faces forward, ignoring me.
I do the same. Focus on the end game: co-CEO. She’s just a distraction.
A very enticing distraction.
Suddenly, the elevator growls and stops short. Lily falls slightly back against the metal wall.
“Are you okay?” I put down my basket and step toward her.
She waves her hand. “I’m fine.”
