Oh, and so was whoever was behind these killings. There was no doubt about that.

And Blackhawk was scared.

For Elizabeth.

The Forest

On The Reservation

A Mile Or So In

Finally, the team lead by Callen and Gene had reached the exact location that Elizabeth had managed to escape from. To be honest, the whole walk there, one thing was for certain.

The caves were mostly underground.

If you didn’t know they were there, you never would have suspected it.

Yes, it looked like hilly terrain, but they were in Utah. The terrain in general wasn’t flat like a prairie. The cave system was hiding in plain sight.

Now, they had to get in, get the remains, as many as they could, and get out.

Safely.

That was the bottom line for all of them.

“Team, don’t lean on the walls,” Callen said. “Elizabeth mentioned spiders. Headlamps on, and stick together. If we have to call Axelle, and tell her that someone got lost in a cave on our watch, we’re all getting busted down to security at the FBI offices.”

Oh, they all knew it too.

A big news story where they were lost in a cave wasn’t the media attention they all wanted.

Going in, Callen and Gene were at the front of the group as they navigated through the cave system. They managed to clear the drop-down quickly to land on the stone floor below. Then, they helped everyone else into the cave so they could begin working.

Scanning the area, they saw the stream that disappeared into the rock they just entered by. They knew what Elizabeth had said about following the water out.

Now, they’d retrace her steps.

“We follow the water upstream,” Gene said, making sure he kept a headcount.

Just.

In.

Case.

As they began moving, it was no easy journey. Oh, for them, it wasn’t bad, but they had headlamps, and were armed with guns.

Gene understood why Elizabeth didn’t want to come back in here. It was creepy in the dark, and to be all alone?

Who could blame her?

The whole team walked for a while, listening to the silence in the cave. For a group of people, they moved rather quietly.

All that they could hear was the dripping of water, and the barely audible sound of water trickling down toward the direction they’d come.

It wasn’t long before they knew they’d reached where Elizabeth had been. Against the one wall, there were skulls stacked.
