“As a heads-up, I had a meeting with Axelle this morning, and she sounded frazzled. Like punch a man in the balls, frazzled.”

He crossed his legs instinctually.

“She’s playing single parent, and she’s not happy. Only, she knows the relationship between her, and Elizabeth is still rocky, so she’s backing off. I think she’d rather her be in DC.”

Speaking of which.

“Did Elizabeth shove Wyler on a plane to be flown back for chemo?” he asked.

Ethan laughed.

“No, she has him being held hostage in a treehouse until she can deal with him. He’s cranky, and she’s bitchy about it. This should be fun.”

Oh, he was glad he wasn’t there.

When his phone beeped, the one on his desk, he knew he needed to get back to work.

“I’ll take care of the situation with Cora, EJ. Just hang in there, and I’ll see you back here soon. My money is on Elizabeth to have everyone back in DC before the week is out.”

Ethan didn’t laugh.

He was sure the man was right.

“Take care,” Ethan said. “See you eventually,” he admitted, being honest.

The phone went dead, and he knew Gabe was likely up to his eyeballs with trouble himself. The Amy situation was problematic.

Heading down the hall, Vivian popped out of the supply room, startling him.

“Holy shit,” he muttered. “Vivian, don’t pop out at Elizabeth like that. She punches. Her reflexes are a lot faster than mine.”

The woman laughed.

“I’m sorry. It’s habit. I ordered you and Director Whitefox lunch. It will be here shortly. Will you be staying here for the rest of the day?”

He didn’t know.

At any point, anything could happen. Ethan had learned that when he’d lived out here.

FBI West, andDamascus, were anyone’s bets.

Oh, and he didn’t know how right he was.

“If I’m not here, shove it in a refrigerator or let someone on the team have it. My wife is in the field, and I might be heading out. I’m waiting on Callen and we’re going to finish working on the assignment Elizabeth gave us. We might do it here, with her, or at home.”

That seemed to work for her.

As they walked toward the lobby, Ethan saw that they had a visitor.

The Reservation Chief of Police had arrived there. She was also holding something in her hand.

“Rayna,” he said, heading her way as Vivian went back to her desk.

She held out the book.

“I met with my father, and he gave me this. I’m assuming you know why?” she asked.

He did.
