I giggled and bit my lip. “It was good. Really good. Now I’m hoping you’d be up for a little one on one time. I just have a feeling that you would be better.”
His big body tensed under my hands and his eyes turned even harder. “Better? In what way?”
Another vapid giggle and I leaned closer to him to whisper into his ear. “You know… Come on, Jax. Show me that you’re a hotter interview than Cole.”
***Jax***
Savannah Lane was trouble. I knew better than to go with her but the flashes of challenge I saw in her pretty green eyes made it impossible for me to say no. It didn’t matter that I could tell she was trying to play me or that all I wanted to do was go home and nurse my wounded ego. Getting screamed at in front of my team was just about the worst thing Dad could’ve done and he fucking knew it. He just didn’t care.
“Come on, Jax.” Savannah batted her lashes at me and stuck her full bottom lip out. “Please?”
“Fine.”
She jumped up and down a few times, making her breasts sway and bounce, and cheered. “Thank you! You won’t regret it.”
If she kept bouncing around like she was I was going to end up regretting much more than an interview. I gripped her shoulders and forced her to still. “We go where I want to go and it's off the record.”
A flirty smile stretched her lips. “Cole said the same thing. Y’all are so secretive. It’s not like I’d write about the things that happened with-”
My hands tightened on her shoulders. “What happened?”
Her cheeks flushed and she didn’t hesitate to twist away from my grip. “Maybe you’ll find out later.”
“Come on. My truck’s close.” I gripped the back of her neck as we walked and felt her shiver. “There’s this diner across town. It has the best burgers around.”
“Yum. Do you know how hard it’s been to find a real cheeseburger in this town? I went from the land of meat to this town full of vegetarians and vegans. I mean, good for them, but what’s a girl got to do to get a brisket burger around here?” She grabbed my arm and hugged it to her chest. “If you bring me to good meat, Jax, I will get on my knees and praise-”
I raised my eyebrows when she suddenly stopped talking.
“I didn’t mean for it to sound… I didn’t…” She cleared her throat and her voice broke as she tried again. “I wasn’t implying blow-”
I could already feel her tits around my arm. If I heard her say the wordsblowandjobin the same sentence, there was a chance I’d embarrass myself by tenting the front of my jeans. “Stop talking, Savannah.”
She nodded. “Yep. That’s a good idea.”
Decorum told me to open her door when we got to my truck but she beat me to it, grinning up at me as she waited for me to unlock the truck. “I can open my own door tonight, handsome. How about you just take the night off from being Mr. Perfect?”
Scowling, I went around to the driver’s side, ignoring the itch in my brain that demanded I do all the things I was supposed to do. I had to grit my teeth when I watched her struggle to climb inside. The truck was tall and it was a high step for her in the dress she had on.
Before I could offer to help she pulled her dress up high on her thighs and pulled herself in. Once she was seated she didn’t bother fixing her dress until after she had her seatbelt on.“Whew. I should’ve told you to get rid of your manners after you helped me into the truck.”
I kept my mouth shut as I pulled out of my private parking space and left campus. I typically went to my room and went over the play film after the game. Every so often I’d go out to a party after that but mostly I kept my head down and stayed away from anything that could get me in trouble. Anything just like the woman in my passenger seat with her hand out the window, catching the wind.
She looked over at me and smiled and it hit me right in the gut. I didn’t feel like I was looking at the annoying bimbo who’d flirted her way through the team. She seemed different, almost normal. Her smile was real, devoid of any of her typical teasing, and after sitting outside in the heat during the game, she looked flushed and a little disheveled. Her hair was bigger than I’d ever seen it, which was saying something, and the red lipstick had faded, leaving her full lips looking used and tempting.
I was staring so hard at her that I nearly drove off the side of the freeway. I swore and corrected the truck to the sound of her laughter. Real laughter, too, not her fake giggle. It was deep and rich and left goosebumps over my arms as it washed over me.Shit.
“You played really well tonight, golden boy. The pass your dad was bitching about was a beauty. A controlled, tight beauty that was never in danger of costing you or the team anything.” She crossed her legs and more of her full thighs were revealed. “I know it’s none of my business but he was full of shit. I used to watch my dad treat my brothers the same way. It was bullshit then and it’s bullshit now.”
I opened my mouth but was too tongue-tied to produce a single sound. After thinking of what I wanted to say, I still didn’t manage anything intelligent. “You know football?”
She cleared her throat and sat up straighter. Another fake giggle. “Um, nope. I just heard one of the reporters say it was a good toss, or whatever.”
I grunted. She was full of shit herself but I didn’t understand why. I didn’t see her angle. Frustrated by the unsolved puzzle and unsure of what the fuck I was doing out with her, I stayed silent until we were parked outside of Billy’s.
“This place is just outside of the city enough to be almost normal. No one here gives a shit about college football or anything else at all, really.” I got out and stretched out an ache in my back. I didn’t notice Savannah coming closer until she was right behind me, pressing both of her hands into the band of sore muscles.
“Lean back into my hands.”
