Dream twirled her white hair. “Come here.” She grabbed my arm and led me into the dayroom, taking a seat at an empty table.
I kept glancing back in the direction Koven and that doctor had gone, a dark lingering shadow hovering over me. Something felt odd about the whole thing.
Dream made a few weird noises. I turned to find her waving at the air above my head. “What the fuck are you doing?” I asked.
She blew in the air and plopped back down. “Just trying to get rid of those dark storm clouds. You and Koven both have so many. No wonder you two are drawn together. Like moths to a flame, only the flame is a bug zapper, and when you touch it…zap!”
She really is fucking crazy.
I smirked. “I like you, cottontail.” She beamed at my words. “Did you get what I asked for?”
Dream nodded. “Easy peasy.” She pulled a small plastic baggie from between her breasts, tucking it beneath her hands, and slid it across the table to me. “An odd request even for me.” She winked and lifted her hands.
Sitting on the table in front of me was a little bag filled with yellow Skittles. My favorite. “Look at you.” I opened the bag and picked one up. “Impressive.” I smiled, popping the candy into my mouth.
Dream braided her long white hair. “Why just yellow?” she asked.
I picked another piece of candy up and examined it. “Because they’re my favorite. And the flavor reminds me of Koven, my own Skittles.” I ate another.
Dream made a face.
“What is it, cottontail?” I asked. “You can tell me. We’re friends after all. You can trust me.”
A blatant lie.
Her big hazel eyes widened. “We are?” I nodded. She eased. “Remember how I mentioned I know every dark little secret in here?” I nodded again. “Well, that includes Koven.”
I figured my stepsister was keeping something from me. But what?
“Care to spill?”
Dream shook her head, her long hair waving around her pale face. “I can’t. She doesn’t know I know what I know. Neither of them do.”
Now that’s confusing as fuck.
I picked up a Skittle and placed it in front of the little bunny rabbit. “Who isthem, Dream?” I asked. She didn’t answer. I placed a second Skittle down. “Come on, you can tell me.” She stared at the candies in silence. “Dream.” Her eyes lifted. “Who is them?”
She slid the Skittles back to me and whispered, “You already know.”
Do I now? Interesting.
I popped the candies into my mouth.
Whatever secrets you’re hiding in here, Koven, I’ll find them. All of them.
Koven came walking down the hall from Dr. Sable’s office. She seemed flustered and out of breath, fixing her hair as she walked. I remained waiting in the doorway of a nearby supply closet, watching from the darkness as she inched closer. Something was off about her entire demeanor.
“I swear to G–”
I snatched her by the arm and pulled her into the supply closet. She gasped, leaving her mouth wide open. I gripped her jaw and spat a Skittle onto her tongue. “Swallow.” Koven did as I said.
“What’re you doing here?” she asked. “You—you can’t be here. You need to go before someone sees you.”
I leaned in close, whispering as I hovered over her mouth. “Us.” She stared up at me. “Before someone sees us.” I grinned. “Get on your knees. And then watch.” Koven opened her mouth to argue. “Uh-uh. Anytime, any place, whatever I wanted. Remember?” Her brow furrowed. “I want you on your knees, now.”
“No, Ziggy.”
I popped another Skittle. “No doesn’t exist between us, remember? Now, kneel.”
