“A good surprise, I hope.” The doubt I see in her eyes guts me because I know it’s my fault.
She nods. “Yes, but…”
“What do you want, Becks?” I’m probably pushing again, but I need her to say it’s me she wants.
“Time?”
Not the answer I’d hoped for, but it’s something I can give her. I want to say more and lay it all out, but now’s not the right time.
So instead, I just nod, then kiss her again—slow and tender, like a promise I’m not ready to speak aloud.
And when I pull back, I whisper the only thing I know for sure.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
CHAPTER 13
Rebecca
Ihold two fingers to my lips again, lost in the memory of Zach kissing me. A rough draft of Gabe Markelson’s contract sits on the desk in front of me, but every time I try to read through it, my mind wanders to last night and what it all means.
Would giving this thing between Zach and me a second chance be a mistake? He was so sweet and tender, not pushing harder for an answer I’m not ready to give. Not yet, anyway. Not until I know what I want.
Part of me is ready to jump into this and not look back, but the other part remains stuck in the past, afraid of a repeat. That I’m just the shiny object that caught Zach’s attention for now until something more exciting comes along. He’s ambitious. I understand that about him. And I’m almost positive covering the Sun Kings wasn’t his first choice.
But I can’t focus on that right now. I need to get this offer sent to Gabe as soon as possible so we can move forward with his relocation to Sarabella. The sooner hegets settled here, the sooner he can start integrating with the team.
Unfortunately, that includes getting Jack on board. I check my watch. He should be here any minute for our meeting.
Before I left home, I shot an email to Jack, asking him to come to my office later this morning to discuss the contract. He’s my GM, and he should be involved, despite my distaste for the man, since he so blatantly tried to undermine me in front of Gabe.
Maybe once Jack sees I’m trying to involve him, he’ll be more on board with the changes and be a team player.
I do a quick scan of the document, make a couple of notes, and look at the time again. Jack’s fifteen minutes late.
“Harper?”
The squeak of her chair reminds me she needs new furniture as well.
She stops in front of my desk. “What’s up?”
“Have you seen Jack?”
“No, he said he had appointments this morning and won’t be in until this afternoon.”
My jaw tightens. I don’t understand what this man is thinking or what his end game is. Does he think if he ignores me, I’ll just go away? That puffing up his chest will scare me off?
“Do you want me to try to reach him?” Her expression turns wary.
Since she’s Jack’s niece, I can only imagine how torn she must feel between working for me and seeing heruncle’s rebellious behavior. Makes me wonder what went on before I came along.
“No, don’t worry about it. I’ll track him down later.” I hand her the catalog that I ordered my furniture from. “Pick out what you want for your office. I can’t stand hearing that chair of yours anymore.”
A slight frown forms on her face. “Are you sure? I can try to oil it again.”
I shake my head. “No, you need a new desk and chair. Everything in this place requires updating. Tab the pages and bring it back to me after lunch, okay?”
Nodding, she grins. “Thank you.”
