“Oh, I bet you have room for this.” He reaches into the cooler and pulls out a small blue box. He opens it to reveal four perfect chocolate spheres. “You like the coconut ones best, right?”
“Right. Yes. I will make room for that.”
He places the chocolate on my tongue, then pops one into his own mouth. We sit in silence, letting the sugar melt through our mouths as we stare across the beautiful meadow where birds frolic and swoop between the trees and the high grass.
“I can’t believe I just met you two years ago today,” he says softly, sitting up and turning to face me.
“Ha! I wondered if this was an anniversary thing.” I smile, squeezing his hand. “Yeah, I know what you mean. It feels like just yesterday, and at the same time, it feels like years ago.”
He nods with a smile, but there’s a very slight tension his eyes, almost nervousness. Like that time last year when Kingston had already arranged to buy me a new car but was uneasy about telling me, so he had one of the Dirty Brothers call to say they decided my old one wasn’t safe to drive anymore after I took it in for a tune-up.
“What’s wrong?” I ask. “If you want both of the last chocolates, I’m fine with?—”
“Could you stand up, please?”
He seems so serious that I jump up without question. Once I’m standing, and he’s sitting on the blanket, he clasps my hands gently. “I’ve told you a million times, and I’ll tell you a million more: Sierra, you are the love of my life. My sweet, perfect, creative, talented girl.”
I think back to all the times he has driven me to different parts of the forest after storms when there are lots of branches on the ground. Taken me to lakes to find the perfect rocks. Driven me and my arrangements to gift stores all over the mountain, or on private deliveries. I think he enjoys the excuse to run around in the woods with me instead of sitting behind a laptop.
“You certainly help with my creativity.”
“I appreciate that, but you are the artist. And I’m incredibly grateful that you’ve chosen to spend your life with me.”
Kingston shifts onto one knee and reaches into his pocket, just like when he proposed to me.
“Sierra, my gorgeous girl, treasure of my heart, would you do me the incredible honor of making a baby with me?”
My mouth falls open with a choked sputter as happy tears spring to my eyes.
Then I’m nodding and falling forward to wrap my arms around his neck for an awkward but cuddly hug.
He gently pushes me back. “Take it easy, baby. You didn’t even check out the ring yet.”
I wipe my eyes with the back of my hand, then gasp loudly when I look down into the box. The platinum setting includes delicate twigs and branches: several of them are curled around a smattering of white diamonds and two different shades of emeralds in leaf shapes. It was clearly designed to complement my engagement and wedding bands.
“I gave the jeweler photos of your other rings,” he says. “Some of the branches are copied exactly.”
The attention to detail is astounding. “This is glorious,” I sputter. “But you already knew that I’d say yes.”
Kingston slips the ring onto my finger, then stretches up to kiss me. Every single kiss we’ve ever shared has been hot. This one is…possessive. His hands run down my back to squeeze my ass firmly, pulling our chests together as I collapse on top of him, rolling on the blanket. We laugh through the kiss, our desire growing at every single point our bodies touch.
“Hey now, buddy,” I laugh, pulling my shirt back down into place. “Is this really the time and place to be getting frisky?”
He laughs again, already diving his fingers into the back of my leggings. “I’m always frisky with you around, gorgeous. Why not start practicing for a baby right now?”
I answer by unbuttoning his shirt while kissing him so hard it feels like my soul is leaving my body.
Everything about Kingston has always been wonderful. And now, with a baby on the horizon…
It’s even more proof that our love will be forever.
